Edward Benn ('Ned') Smith (VC, DCM) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces, and (at 19)the youngest such recipient from the First World War.
He is unusual in having gained both the DCM and VC, and in quick succession, during the Hundred Days Offensive.

A military courier network in support of an English army fighting in Scotland, called the Royal Post, set up during the reign of Edward IV (1461-83), and between his court in London and Berwick-on-Tweed in 1482 is believed to the origins of the modern British military postal services.
Their timing was fortuitous as it coincided with the army reforms instigated by the Secretary to State for War, Edward Cardwell (1813-86), whose aim was to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Part of the reforms included the re-organisation of the volunteers, thus the Special Constables got their wish and the 49th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers was raised, its recruits came from the Post Office, and they served in an infantry role.
