 Worcester: Behind the Name
The 6th Earl of Worcester, Edward Somerset...was a contemporary of Cecil Calvert (1601 -1675) and through his position as a prominent Catholic and royalist official in Ireland during the Civil War may have been in a position to support Calvert's Maryland colony.
One of the Earls of Worcester the 6th who was also the 2d Marquis of Worcester, was a particularly interesting individual, who has been credited by at least one writer/historian of the 19th century as the inventor of the steam engine.
The king induced the Earl to raise troops to fight for the Royalist cause, and after the fall of Raglan Castle, Somerset was forced to flee England for Paris in 1646.

Lady Blanche Somerset, who died October 28, 1649, and married Thomas Arundell, 2nd Baron Arundell of Wardour, with whom she had one son and two daughters, his only children; the settlement for this marriage was on May 11th, 1607.

Titherly has suggested that this bearer is William Stanley, the son-in-law of the Earl of Oxford, but he offered no particular evidence to back this up.
Canopy Bearer # 1 is the man at the lower left, in complete profile, with a pointy beard, wearing mostly white and pale green, who bears the canopy pole on his right shoulder.
The man in bright orange with the impressive Order of the Garter necklace is Edward Somerset, the 4th Earl of Worcester, who, in the conventional view, is thought to have to been the patron for this painting.
