Commander Edward Stanley, who has died aged 89, was a submarine ace awarded a DSO and DSC as a member of the "Fighting Tenth" squadron in the Mediterranean during the Second World War.
In April 1941 Stanley was on the casing of Regent supervising the flying of a white flag as it entered the Yugoslav port of Kotor, in an attempt to rescue the British ambassador Sir Ronald Campbell, when two German aircraft dive-bombed: some shrapnel lodged under his ribs, where it remained throughout his life.
Stanley's first command was the elderly training submarine H50, which had once been commanded by his uncle and was used to exercise escort vessels in the technique of rapid boarding.

He was born to Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby and Emma Caroline Bootle-Wilbraham, daughter of Edward Bootle-Wilbraham, 1st Baron Skelmersdale, and was the older brother of Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby.
Lord Stanley, as he was styled before acceding to the earldom, was educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a high degree and became a member of the society known as the Apostles.

In July 1822, Stanley, who saw himself as a 'constitutional Whig' at that point in his political career, took his seat in parliament as the MP for Stockbridge, a seat bought for him by his grandfather, the 12th Earl of Derby.
Stanley then decided to take responsibility for the legislation and made a brilliant speech that was so hostile to the Irish party that he silenced O'Connell and ensuring the passing of the Bill by huge majorities.
Stanley opposed the alienation of Church property but Lord John Russell was determined to reduce the amount of land owned by the Anglican Church in Ireland.

Even if William Stanley was not actually William Shakespeare after all, it is true that his brother Ferdinand before being murdered was the benefactor of Derby’s Men and that Shakespeare was one of it’s actors if not writers.
It was probably not widely known that Edward Lear was an illustrator and artist first and a writer of limericks second.
More to follow on this Lord Stanley who together with Edward Stanley Esq of Cross Hall were the benefactors of the land necessary for the building and functioning of the old Water Tower.
