The Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble is a recording and concert group devoted to the performance of music of all periods on ancient as well as modern instruments.
The group is composed of three trumpeters (Edward H. Tarr, Jean-Pierre Mathez, Charles von Drak) and three trombonists (Helmut Schmitt, Kurt Federowitz, Karl-Heinz Weber).
The Ensemble's leader, Edward Tarr, was born in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1936.

Edward H. Tarr was born in America, lived for nearly 20 years in Switzerland, and is now residing in Germany.
Tarr taught at the prestigious pioneering institute for research and performance in early music, the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, as well as at the Basel Conservatory of Music (Baroque and modern trumpet, respectively) in Switzerland, and is presently teaching at the Karlsruhe Conservatory (Musikhochschule).
As a teacher Tarr has had unusual success: the winners of the International Music Competition of the German radio stations (ARD) in Munich in 1986 and 1993, and both first prizewinners of the 1st and 2nd International Altenburg Competitions for Baroque trumpet (1996, 2001), were his pupils.

 Early History 1
Edward Tarr’s article, "The Romantic Trumpet" in the Historic Brass Society Journal (Tarr 1993, 213-261), provides an interesting look at some early documentation concerning the cornet à pistons and was the impetus for much of the discussion below.
On page 257 of his article, Tarr quotes an early document written by Berlioz appearing in The Memoirs of Hector Berlioz (Cairns 1975, 136) which describes the instruments of the orchestra at the Prix de Rome award ceremony in October 1830, a ceremony at which he was awarded first prize.
Tarr also quotes Dauverné’s Méthode pour la trompette in his article (Tarr 1993, 258) and mentions that the instrument may have appeared towards the year 1832.

In the 1960s, Walter Hermann Sallagar edited a so-called concerto of his in D major for trumpet, 2 oboes, and 2 bassoons, as well as certain other works involving bassoon.
Edward Tarr brought out Hertel's Double Concerto in E flat for trumpet and oboe and made the first recording of it in 1965; shortly afterwards he published the Trumpet Concertos No. 1 and No. 2, both in E flat major.
With the present edition of the third and last one in D major the publication of Hertel's works for solo trumpet is now completed.

In 1968 under a Canada Council scholarship he studied with Edward Tarr in Basel, Switzerland.
Oades played 1963-9 with the Stratford Festival orchestra, for which he was also personnel manager in 1968, and he coordinated its annual chamber music workshop 1966-9.

The recording was a landmark because the plan and acoustics of San Marco had originally inspired this music--and much to follow.
