When her father became King in 1936 upon her uncle King Edward VIII's abdication, she became heiress presumptive and was henceforth known as HRH The Princess Elizabeth.
Like her mother, she blamed Edward VIII for, as she saw it, abandoning his duty and forcing her father to become King — a strain which she believed shortened his life by many years.

"'Tyrian Plum' was chosen as the colour and 100,000 sheets of 240 stamps each were produced by the printers, De La Rue."
A decision was taken to hold back the new stamps until stocks of the old 2d had been exhausted.
King Edward VII then fell seriously ill. Although at one point it was thought he was recovering, he died suddenly on 6 May 1910.

In 1910 a new 2d stamp was prepared for issue, and 100,000 sheets of 240 stamps each were produced by the printers.
It was decided to hold back the new stamps until stocks of the old 2d had been exhausted, and because King Edward VII had fallen ill, in fact dying on 6 May 1910.
This represents the only known used example of the stamp, as the stock which had already been printed, bearing the head of the late Edward VII, was destroyed.

The cover arrived on the day that King Edward VII dies and the Prince of Wales became King George V, which happened to be May 6, 1910, the seventieth anniversary of the first day of use of the Penny Black.
Blocks of the King George V “Downey Head” issue in reverse colors, that is, the 1/2d in red and the 1d in green.
Bacon survived the King and continued to serve during the short reign of King Edward VIII and the beginning of the reign of King George VI.
