1914-18 war - Art of the First World War - 56 - Edward Alexander Wadsworth
Edward Alexander Wadsworth, Dazzled-Ships in Drydock at Liverpool, 1919, oil on canvas, 304.8 x 243.8 cm, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
One of the founders of the Vorticist movement, Wadsworth (1889-1949) was involved in the first edition of the magazine Blast.
Using the pattern used by Campbell Taylor to produce just one precise illustration, Wadsworth succeeds in a more effective pictorial demonstration, applying camouflage to the canvas itself and playing on figurative legibility.

The Graphic Work of Edward Wadsworth by Edward Wadsworth
Edward Wadsworth was born in Cleckheaton in Yorkshire in 1889.
As the anxiety and tension of the war period faded, so did Wadsworth' s Vorticist preoccupations, and when he made the engraving for Sailing-ships and Barges in 1926 they were tranquil and reflective: his fascination for precision and detail was now used to show rigging and boat construction accurately.
Edward Wadsworth's daughter relates in the biography of her father how, in 1927, she found him making a bonfire of all his woodcut blocks.

The graphic work of Edward Wadsworth
During eight years from 1913, Wadsworth produced over 50 woodcuts, and, from 1919, five lithographs, a couple of etchings, and 23 copper engravings for the book Sailing-ships and Barges of the Western Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas.
The woodcuts are of great interest in themselves and also because of the variety of subjects that caught Wadsworth's imagination: harbours, the industrial valleys of his childhood, the Greek island on which he was stationed during the war, the dazzle-camouflaged ships, and the Black Country.
Each of the prints is reproduced (many are in colour) in the original size - a few have had to be reduced to fit the page size.

He was raised in a northern industrial environment that was to appear with great forcefulness in his Vorticist work.

The Edward Marshall Trust has awarded a grant of £50,000 to the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, enabling the Trustees to commission new designs for the furnishing of the Pavilion, as part of a major restoration programme.
This role has a particular resonance at the Pavilion, where artists including Edward Wadsworth, Maholy Nagy and Alvar Aalto have contributed to the obvious fluidity between exterior and interior - characterising the spirit and design of the building.
It is important to the approach that creative working methods are continually sought and applied in the current redevelopment.
