Edward Winter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edward Winter (June 3, 1937 in Ventura, California - March 8, 2001 in Woodland Hills, California) was an American actor perhaps most well-known for his role as the Military Intelligence officer, Lieutenant Colonel/Colonel Flagg on the television series M*A*S*H.
Although Winter only appeared in six episodes as Flagg (seven if you count his first appearance as Capt. Halloran, who might have been Flagg under an alias) during the show's 11-year run, he became one of the program's more memorable and popular recurring characters.
Winter died due to complications from Parkinson's disease.

Edward G. Winter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For example, Winter proves conclusively that the old story about Paul Morphy having "died in his bath surrounded by women's shoes" is a myth, and rescues from obscurity one of the best players of the 19th century--Samuel Rosenthal--who is virtually unknown today.
Schiller and Keene's supporters argue that Winter is merely being pedantic, unfairly judging their books, which are mostly about chess practice for beginners (opening theory, tactics, etc.) as if they were works of chess history for experts in the field.
Winter's supporters claim that, while severe, Winter's criticism is almost invariably well-justified, and that historical accuracy is a necessity in all chess books, not only in those explicitly written from the historical or biographical point of view.

Winter is on everyone's minds, which must be why I was recently asked several winter-related questions by Colin Grewar, host of CBC Radio's Afternoon Edition.

That's mainly because turbulence is the result of warm air rising and cold air sinking, and there's much less difference in temperature in a winter cloud than there is in a summer cloud.

In 1982 Winter started the magazine "Chess Notes," born from the realization that chess literature is a garbage bin of made-up anecdotes, conjectures that pose as facts and mistakes that are given eternal life by the laziness of thoughtless plagiarists.
But Winter must have relished the opportunity to write: "The consternation of Keene can well be imagined when Janowsky forced a checkmate in five moves." By far not all Winter's chess notes are meant polemically.
Winter quotes a saying about spectacular moves that look like typographical errors and of course he uses the opportunity to enquire who was the originator of this saying.

Book Reviews by IM John L Watson
Winter, in the 'Historical Havoc' essay, complains about contemporary opening books, saying that "historical ignorance of the openings is rampant, with writers regularly analysing from scratch positions already meticulously examined in the past".
But Winter seems to stick with his heroes and his villains, come what may, and is very selective in what he reports about them.
If Winter were aware of that, it might temper his criticism, or at least confine it to matters of historical accuracy.
