  Edward Yang - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edward Yang (Chinese: 楊德昌, pinyin: Yáng Déchāng; born November 6, 1947), along with Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Tsai Ming Liang, is one of the leading filmmakers and artists of the Taiwanese New Wave and Taiwanese Cinema.
Edward Yang was born in Shanghai in 1947, he grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, and later studying Electrical Engineering in Taiwan, enrolling in the graduate program at the University of Florida, where he received his Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering / Computer Science in 1974.
Yang then followed with A Brighter Summer Day (1991), a sprawling examination of youth-teen gangs, 1949 Taiwanese societal developments, and American pop-culture (the title is taken from an Elvis refrain); the film was considered by many critics to be a masterpiece.

The photography of Yang Weihan and master lighter Li Longyu thus presents a visual corollary to the thematic focus on the shallowness of appearances: NJ is chosen to represent the company because he "looks the most honest," but, in actuality, he is incapable of telling a lie.

Yang also arranges his visuals to reflect the idea of being able to see only "half of what's going on." Once armed with his father's camera, Yang-Yang takes pictures of the backs of people's heads, signifying what they cannot see.
Yang also frequently shoots through glass, utilising reflections to show the audience what is both in front of and behind the glass at the same time.

Edward Yang (the director/writer) also does a wonderful job with character development, and while you may struggle to figure out who's who in the beginning of the movie, you will no doubt get to know and care about each member of the troubled Jiang family by the end of the movie.
The ability of Edward Yang to fuse imagination with, it must be assumed, an amazing honesty in reflecting upon his own life, to share what he holds most dear, and what evokes the most wonder, is something we, as an audience, can only marvel at and give thanks for.

Yi Yi is the 53 year-old Yang's seventh feature film and, as far as I can tell, only the first to be distributed theatrically in the United States.
The title literally translates to "one one," though Yang (who lived and studied in the U.S. for several years) intended it to be like a count-off to a snappy jazz song, "a one and a two..." And indeed, the movie plays like a song.
But Yang's divine control and precision of his material is almost imperceptible.
