It was founded in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1999, out of the wreckage of several smaller chains that had gone bankrupt at the end of the megaplex building binge of the mid-1990s.
It replaced the pre-feature film slide show of advertisements and trivia set to various elevator music-like songs, It is somewhat reminiscent of the newsreels of the classic film era, except that it focuses completely on paid advertising; something newsreels did only a fraction of the time.
April 2005 saw the addition of another theatre chain being brought into the Regal mold: Eastern Federal, which was a fairly prominent theatre company in the Southeast US.

Edwards Theatres Circuit Inc., which has shed movie houses that have been a drain on the Newport Beach chain, is moving to break contracts that could lead to closing six Imax theaters, including three in Southern California.
Edwards, which is trying to reorganize its debts under Bankruptcy Court protection, and Imax Corp. said they have failed to negotiate a settlement on Imax's claims for $29 million owed in licensing fees under the contracts.
Edwards won court approval last August to get out of the lease at the Lido theater in Newport Beach, but is still operating it.
