  Edwin Freiherr von Manteuffel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edwin Freiherr von Manteuffel (February 24, 1809 - June 17, 1885) was a German generalfeldmarschall noted for his victories in the Franco-Prussian War.
Son of the president of the superior court of Magdeburg, he was born at Dresden, and brought up with his cousin, Otto von Manteuffel (1805-1882), the Prussian statesman, entered the guard cavalry at Berlin in 1827, and became an officer in 1828.
He served as lieutenant-general (to which rank he was promoted on the coronation of William I, October 18, 1861) in the Danish war of 1864, and at its conclusion was appointed civil and military governor of Schleswig.

He was brought up with his cousin, Otto von Mapteuffel (1805-1882), the Prussian statesman, entered the guard cavalry at Berlin in 1827, and became an officer in 1828.
After attending the War Academy for two years, and serving successively as aide-de-camp to General vo~i Muffling and to Prince Albert of Prussia, he was promoted captain in 1843 and major in 1848, when he became aide-de-camp to Frederick William IV., whose confidence he had gained during the revolutionary movement in Berlin.
He served as lieutenant-general (to which rank he was promoted on the coronation of William I., Oct. 18, 1861) in the Danish war of 1864, and at its conclusion was appointed civil and military governor of Schleswig.

Von den zwischen 1740 und 1763 ernannten 274 Generalen sind in den beiden ersten Schlesischen Kriegen 26, in den Jahren 1756 bis 1759 33 Generale, darunter 2 Feldmarschälle, und 1760/62 ein General gefallen oder im Felde an Wunden oder Krankheiten gestorben, insgesamt 60, d.h.
Wegen Krankheit schieden von 1740 bis 1786 insgesamt 104 Generale, das sind 20,17%, vorzeitig aus dem Dienst, was der König beim tatsächlichen Erweis ohne weiteres zuließ, immerhin auch wieder mehr als jeder fünfte.
Von 195 Generalen waren 45 unter Friedrich I. und 9 ab 1740 geboren, 141 (72%) aber zwischen 1713 und 1738, daher altersmäßig dem König näher.

He also managed to talk round Prussian Chief of Staff Helmuth von Moltke, who was cool towards an all-out war with Austria, by promising him an alliance with Italy that would divert some of the Austrian forces.
