Edwin Linkomies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edwin Linkomies (1894–1963, until 1928 Edwin Flinck) was Prime Minister of Finland March 1943 to August 1944, and therefore one of the seven politicians on Soviet demands sentenced to 5½ years in prison as allegedly responsible for the Continuation War.
Linkomies was a prominent fennoman academic, pro-rector (administrative head) of the University of Helsinki 1932–43, rector 1956–62, and the government's Chancellor of the University from 1962 until his death.
Edwin Linkomies was born as Edwin Flinck in East-Finnish Viipuri, son of a Finland-Swedish officer who died soon after his birth, but grew up in West-Finnish Raumo, north of Turku, in a purely Finnish-speaking region of Finland.

However, in the 1950s, after the disappointment over Sweden and the Winter War, he contributed energetically to inter- Nordic countries contacts and cultural exchange, and may be credited for the at least partial healing of the rupture between Conservatives in Finland and Scandinavia, that had its background in fennomania and the Åland Crisis.

The obvious choice was the Vice-Rector (and Prime Minister of Finland in 1943 - 44) Edwin Linkomies, though his position was weakened by a tug of war between representatives of the Humanities and the Natural Sciences.
Linkomies also had opponents among the professors because of his autocratic manner.
The presence of Rolf Nevanlinna or Edwin Linkomies lent a special glamour to these occasions; after the death of the latter, Nevanlinna was the undisputed star of the group.

No parliamentary elections were held, that could have indicated a possibly increased support for IKL, but their militarist, revanchist, expansionist and anti-democratic views became popular in the other parties, partly influencing as far left as the Social Democratic Speaker of Parliament Väinö Hakkila.
After the initial enthusiasm during the first autumn of the Continuation War in 1941, this opinion waned, and IKL wasn't included in Edwin Linkomies' cabinet in spring 1943.
In the aftermath of the Continuation War, IKL was banned four days after the armistice between Finland and the Soviet Union was signed 19 September, 1944.
