When the expert on Japan, Professor Edwin O. Reischauer, heard this terrible news, he rushed into the office of his chief, Major Alfred MacCormack, in a department of the Army Intelligence Service.

 A Reischauer Returns
Son of the late University Professor Edwin O. Reischauer, the renowned scholar of Japan, Robert graduated from the College in 1963.
Because Corporation members are stewards of Harvard's long-term future, Reischauer was asked about a topic of professional interest: the likely effect of changing financial circumstances on Harvard, in light of sharp budget cutbacks recently announced at Dartmouth, Duke, Stanford, and elsewhere.
Reischauer's characteristic comment on the fisc of the United States—speaking of a large nonprofit "organization"—in his thirty-fifth-reunion report provides useful insight both on how much the country's circumstances have changed since 1998, and on the big-picture perspective he will bring to the Corporation.

Reischauer Scholars will in time become an association of individuals, educated in the liberal arts and committed to international understanding.
In addition to representing the interests of the United States, Reischauer saw the ambassadorship as an opportunity to mediate between what he called his "two homelands," and to build "an equal partnership" between two industrial nations across the barriers of language, culture, race, and history.
Therefore, by enabling a Japanese student to follow this same path, the Ambassador Edwin O. Reischauer Scholarship is a fitting memorial to a significant American friend of Japan.

Reischauer notes that the Japanese political system operates through political parties even though the concept of political parties in early Japan were met with stern disapproval.
Reischauer surmises that the political process in Japan is extremely complex, reasonably effective and seems well adapted to Japanese styles of interpersonal relations…it is flexible, affords more veto power to minority opposition and produces more compromise that most other democratic systems.
I feel that Reischauer is correct in his assumption that the Japanese system is effective in translating the will of the electorate into political actions by the government.

 McCune-Reischauer
The system was created in 1937 by two Americans: George M. McCune and Edwin O. Reischauer.
Critics of the McCune-Reischauer system claim that casual users of the system omit the breves over the o for 어 and the u for 으, because typing o or u without the breves is often easier than adding them.
This, in turn, can lead to confusion over whether the o being Romanized is 오 or 어 or the u being Romanized is 우 or 으.
