 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Edwin
By Edwin's persuasion, moreover, Eorpwald, King of East Anglia, son of his old friend Redwald, was led to become a Christian.
Edwin was slain on 12 October, 633, in repelling an attack made on him by Penda, the pagan King of Mercia, who, together with the Welsh prince Cadwallon (a Christian only in name), had invaded his dominion.
Perishing thus in conflict with the enemies of the Faith, he was regarded as a martyr and as such was allowed by Gregory XIII to be depicted in the English College church at Rome.

 Bede's people: Edwin
Edwin was bound to respond to the provocation from the West Saxons and, according to Bede's account, he promised to accept the Christian faith if he were granted victory.
Through his acceptance of Christianity, Edwin gained within his administration a clergy who had skills of literacy which were previously unknown in the kingdom and who depended for their position on him without reference to any traditional tribal or factional loyalties.
In the end, the challenge to Edwin came not from Æthelfrith's sons in the north, but from an alliance of the Mercian king Penda and the Welsh king Cadwallon, both of whom are likely to have suffered as a result of Edwin's growing power to the south.

The Scientist : 2005 Lasker Awards announced   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Edwin Southern and Alec Jeffreys will be honored for their contributions to genetic analysis; the former created Southern hybridization in order to distinguish subtle genetic differences between humans, while the latter used this device to develop DNA fingerprinting.
In the 1970s Edwin Southern, now a professor at the University of Oxford, realized that the porous nature of agarose gels could be used to transfer DNA to a filter.
A few years later, when Alec Jeffreys was studying gene evolution using what he called "Southern's wonderful blots", he generated an X-ray that represented "biological identification at the DNA level." The film demonstrated that a child's genetic pattern was a composite of the parents' genetic patterns, which were completely distinct.

British scientists Edwin Southern and Alec Jeffreys were honored this weekend for their clinical research that award sponsors say dramatically changed the fields of human genetics and forensic science.
Southern, professor of biochemistry at the University of Oxford, and Jeffreys, genetics research professor at the University of Leicester, are the winners of the 2005 Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research, announced Sunday in New York.
Southern and Jeffreys revolutionized the two fields with the development of a technique known as Southern blotting, which enables the detection of a single gene in a complex genome, in turn enabling the rapid sequencing of genomes.

 Edwin Soto-Quiñones
Edwin Soto- Quiñones obtained his degree in Information Systems from the University of Puerto Rico because he thought he wanted a career as a computer programmer.
Edwin was hesitant at first – he felt that it would be a big risk to work in the insurance business because he did not have a background in this industry.
For him, the ideal candidate will be someone who has excelled in his or her field of expertise, but who is looking to experience greater growth and opportunity – a background in finance is not necessary to be a successful financial professional.

Southern Blotting by Chrissy Boone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The procedure, named after its originator Edwin Southern, is a method for transferring DNA from an agarose or acrylamide gel to a nitrocellulose paper followed by the hybridization of the DNA to a radioactive probe (Karp 800).
In prenatal diagnosis Southern blotting shows certain genetic defects that can be harmful to the mother or to the child (Drlica 152).
The Southern blot makes it possible to limit the analysis of one specific area of a gene that is responsible for producing a certain protein, or coding for an antibody production, or even to show where a mutation has occurred.

At Oxford University Edwin Southern, of Southern blot fame, developed a way to use inkjet printing – using four bases rather than four colors – to build oligonucleotide sequences on glass slides like Legos on a solid surface, one atop another.
Aware that they had something powerful by the tail, Southern and Fodor toiled in their respective laboratories, relatively unnoticed by investors and the scientific community at large.
Brown's idea was for an array fabrication method fundamentally distinct from both Fodor's and Southern's: Instead of building oligonucleotides on the array in situ, Brown proposed arranging already-synthesized snippets of DNA at regular intervals on a surface.

The Southern blot is a technique employed to ascertain information about the molecular weight and relative amount of a DNA sequence of interest.
The assay was first developed by Edwin Southern and is a combination of gel electrophoresis of DNA (often first fragmented by restriction_enzyme digestion), transfer of the same to a charged membrane, and hybridization of a labeled DNA probe.
Following hybridization, the membrane is washed to remove unbound probe, and an image obtained via autoradiography or using equipment such as a phosphoimager.
