  Captain Edwin Swales DFC, VC
During his active service Edwin Swales was twice forced to crash land his Lancaster bomber, on one occasion three of his engines were put out of action when he was over the Ruhr valley, but he struggled on and made it back to Belgium and landed safely.
Swales bomber took off 5 minutes ahead of the rest of the group, but they were no sooner over the target than they were attacked by a Messerschmitt Bf110, whose fire shattered one engine and holed the fuel tanks.
Edwin Swales V.C. was buried in the War Cemetery at Leopoldsburg on the Belgium border with Germany.

Edwin Evelyn Swales was born in Inanda, Natal, South Africa.
Swales was a rugby player of some considerable ability both as a pre-war civilian and for various military teams.
Edwin Swales was the only S.A.A.F. pilot during 1939-45 to be appointed a Pathfinder Master Bomber and also to have been posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

Edwin received his wings on 26th June 1943 at Kimberley, and was promoted to lieutenant on the same day; in August 1943 he was seconded to join the RAF in England.
Edwin Swales VC DFC was buried in the War Cemetery at Leopoldsburg on the Belgium border with Germany.
Edwin’s uniform and replica medals are on display at the Military Museum at Johannesburg (his actual medals are also kept there locked in a safe).

The one on display was presented to Mrs Olive Swales (Edwin's mother) at a special ceremony in Durban after the end of World War 2.
He heard the sound of a bomber approaching (Swales Lancaster) and at about 7.10 pm German time he suddenly saw what he described as a "Christmas Tree" descending on the middle of the town and he knew that was the marker for an air raid.
Swales was awarded the DFC for his part in the daylight raid on Cologne and the award was gazetted on 23 February - the same day as the planned raid on Pforzheim.

Twelve aircraft of the bomber fleet did not return to their bases; ten of them were shot down by fighter aircraft of the German Airforce (stationed at Sachsenheim) and two others were supposedly accidentially hit by "friendly" bombs and crashed not far from Pforzheim.
Captain Swales was killed in the crash of his aircraft near the French-Belgian border about 400 km from Pforzheim since his aircraft had been damaged by two successive hits from a German nightfighter-plane while circling over Pforzheim and supervising the bombardment.
