Called Ke-na-po-co-mo-co or "river of the snake fish" by Native Americans, the Eel River is a tributary of the Wabash River in Indiana.
Originating as an ice-marginal channel at the edge of the retreating Saginaw Lobe of the Wisconsin Glacier, the Eel River was later buried by the glacier's advancing Erie Lobe.

It was bounded on the north by Eel River and on the west and south by swamp land.
But the early description of Eel River indicates that the river and the land through which it flowed were very important to the Indians and the early white traders.

The Little Turtle Waterway is a 5-block long interpretive, multi-use trail from the Little Turtle Waterway Plaza to the confluence of the Wabash and Eel Rivers, including a 4.75 acre festival area along the north bank of the Wabash River.
Their vision is to develop and coordinate a strategic plan for a 150+ mile linear park from Madison, Indiana to Maysville, Kentucky, including multiple-use trails, restoration of the riverbanks, and conservation of the natural resources.
Ohio River trail initiatives in Indiana include the Ohio River Greenway of Jefferson/Clarksville/New Albany and another section of greenway in Newburgh and Warrick County.

Mississinewa River on the Wabash ceded a narrow strip of land largely north of the Wabash and extending from the Tippecanoe River on the west to the eastern boundary of Indiana.
One week later, on October 23, 1826, a treaty was concluded with the Miami in which they ceded all their claim to land in the state of Indiana, north and west of the Wabash and Miami rivers.
Potawatomi villages existed on the north bank of Eel river and without question their hunting and trapping would have extended south of the river into area for which we have documented Miami villages.

The others are the Blue River in Harrison, Crawford and Washington Counties and Wildcat Creek in Tippecanoe and Carroll Counties.
At the end of the last ice age, the upper part of Cedar Creek began as an "ice-marginal" channel at the western edge of the Erie Lobe of the glacial ice and formed a single stream with the Eel River in what is now Whitley County.
This "ancestral Eel River" was also fed by glacial meltwater surging through a sub-ice channel or "tunnel valley" which can be seen today as the beautiful Cedar Creek Canyon area of northern Allen County.

A recent opportunity occurred when an outstanding petroglyph site was rediscovered in 1993 by a state forester in a remote section of the Eel River Canyon in Trinity County, California.
Subsequent archaeological survey of the area by the authors resulted in the identification of a major archaeological site containing three housepits, a midden deposit, an abundant scatter of chipped and ground stone artifacts, and two panels of petroglyphs which display elaborate, multiple, superimposed elements representing six discrete styles.
Site CA-TRI-1 is situated within the territory of the Eel River Wailaki, one of the three major tribelets of the Wailaki people who until the mid-nineteenth century occupied a series of villages along the upper drainage of the Eel River in northwestern California.
