Topic: Effigy Of The Forgotten

Amazon.com: Effigy of the Forgotten/Pierced from Within: Suffocation: Music
But anyway, "Effigy" and "Pierced" clearly stand as paragons of how technical death should be done.
"Effigy" is a steamroller of stunning power and heaviness, with Frank Mullen's impossibly low gurgling grunt serving as an extra instrument to complement the crushing riffs of Terrence Hobbs and Doug Cerrito and Mike Smith's crazy drum patterns.
While "Effigy" was a finely honed killing machine of an album, "Pierced" saw the band refining their approach even further, adding even more reams of complexity to their already potent sound.

From the moment I heard the opening track "Deceit", I was immediately jumping for joy, due to the speed and intensity they still have after all these years, and the fact that Frank's growl is still low and ferocious.
Mike's drumming is superb, proving that the days of Effigy are not forgotten, and he can still play super fast.
While the record certainly doesn’t top Pierced or Effigy, it is still proof that after years of not playing together Suffocation can still deliver the death metal, and do it well.

But even if Gregory XIII was aware of all the circumstances of the massacre (which has never been proven), it must be borne in mind that he did not rejoice at the bloodshed, but at the suppression of a political and religious rebellion.
The medal which Gregory XIII had struck in memory of the event bears his effigy on the obverse, which ion the reverse under the legend Vgonotiorum Strages (overthrow of the Huguenots) stands an angel with cross and drawn sword, killing the Huguenots.

Teufel's Tomb : Brutal Isn't Just A Way Of Life... It's Also Stupid!
For some strange reason, 13 years after parting ways with Suffocation they've decided to release a "best of" compilation featuring 12 tracks taken from Effigy of the Forgotten, Breeding the Spawn and Pierced From Within.
The selection of tracks is pretty solid containing a lot of Suffocation's best and most beloved songs, however, Roadrunner Records recently released Effigy of the Forgotten and Pierced From Within as a two CD pack a few years ago which is still readily available in stores and online shops everywhere for the same price.
If you don't own any Suffocation material and are interested in hearing what the hype is all about, you definitely need to pick up the two CD compilation, no extreme metal head should be without Effigy of the Forgotten and Pierced from Within in their collection.

And in addition to that, I was recently revisiting the liner notes and noticed that "Effigy..." is dedicated to the icon that was Roger Patterson of Atheist.
"Effigy of the Forgotten" is a landmark in the death metal underground.
.With "Effigy of the Forgotten" Suffocation exploded with a missile of pure fucking death of pulsating blast beats coupled with intricately woven micro-thrash riffs attaining a marriage of technicality and brutality that hasn't been equaled or bettered until the year 2000 with Immolation's "Close to a World Below".

Suffocation - Heavy Metal and Death Metal and Black Metal Wiki
Their first full-length, Effigy of the Forgotten, is regarded by some as one of the most intense and influential records metal has to offer, and is the focal point of Suffocation legacy.
It is arguable that 1993's Breeding the Spawn was as important, but the production alienated a lot of the listeners pulled in by the "brutal" production of Effigy of the Forgotten.
Each Suffocation album (pre-Souls to Deny) is unique in both sound and motive, and avoids the plummet into redundant mediocrity that a lot of similar bands have encountered.

This is similar to Effigy but the vocals are sung much better so that the words don't sound like "murf murf murf" but they are still deep and deathly.
The guitar's distortion is a little less bassy too, allowing the riffs to shine through easier and the guitar to have more loudness (although less power, I liked the distortion on Effigy better).
This album is even more complex than Effigy, it is one of the best technical brutal death albums I own, their guitar playing skill is beyond belief.

Also noteable, is Suffocation's tendency to stray away from the typical verse-chorus-verse song structure, and yet effectively create songs that fit together perfectly, where a lot of bands would end up producing a load of riffing, hardly resemblant of a song.
The first of their particularly noteable releases, in 1991, was Effigy of the Forgotten, (Although earlier that same year they released Human Waste) and although the drumming isn't as advanced as we've come to expect from Death Metal today, it's commonly acknowledged that Effigy...
was definately a more percussion-based album than Effigy..., and yet home to some of the most enthralling riffs and captivating solos in Death Metal.

A truly devastating display of technical death metal bordering on grindcore, this incredibly influential release opened the doors for an entire generation of extreme metal miscreants, who, in retrospect, made it the prevalent template for East Coast metal in the '90s.
But Suffocation's gradual rise to prominence proves that even more listeners hung in there long enough to learn to appreciate the attention to detail and the hours of fascinating discovery to be found in the band's maniacally complex rhythms and lead and rhythm guitar acrobatics (note their astounding combination in the brilliantly titled "Reincremation").
Not for the weak of will, Effigy of the Forgotten is a death/grind tour de force.

But for a death metal band to be dismissed as an Effigy of the Forgotten clone is usually not a compliment to the newcomer.

Review: After Suffocation's debut LP, "Effigy of the Forgotten" was unleashed into the masses, all sensible death metal fans were looking forward to their upcoming effort.
It must be mentioned that lots of great bands dropped killer debut albums around "Effigy," like Cannibal Corpse and Deicide, but those acts seemed a little weak next to Suffocation's now trademark style of pounding muscianship.
Cannibal Corpse's now infamous "Butchered at Birth" was also noticeably more sophisticated than their first LP, "Eaten Back to Life." The album is fun to listen every once and a while...

Death metal band Suffocation was formed in New York in the early '90s, comprising vocalist Frank Mullen, guitarists Doug Cerrito and Terrance Hobbs, bassist Chris Richards, and drummer Mike Smith.
The group's 1991 debut album, Effigy of the Forgotten, became quite influential in the grind/death metal community.
Released on Roadrunner Records, it was followed two years later by Breeding of the Spawn.

Complex and unrelentingly savage, Human Waste saw Suffocation bash out the beginnings of death metal's most visible style, the "New York" combination of blasting grindcore beats and metallic textures.
The now classic, Effigy of the Forgotten was released in 1991 via Roadrunner Records.
Effigy of the Forgotten took SUFFOCATION’s intent to a new plane, taking the multiple languages of music and unifying them in an evocative, thundering chorus of death metal.

Nic Bullen of Napalm Death can sound remarkably like the Cookie Monster; his performance on the band's 1987 debut "Scum" (Earache)--which contains 28 songs, 11 of which are under one minute in length, including "You Suffer," which clocks in at less than two seconds--is a virtual Cookie Monster tribute.
Frank Mullen of Suffocation, whose 1991 album "Effigy of the Forgotten" (Roadrunner) is considered a model of death-metal music, sounds like an especially malevolent Cookie Monster.
The term also signifies a level of incomprehensibility of the lyrics, which in most cases is absolute.
