Orlev, like Efi Eitam, is considered a war hero by the State of Israel and received the Medal of Distinguished Service in the Yom Kippur War.
Orlev is considered as the leader of the pragmatic faction of the Mafdal and the main opposition against Efi Eitam - the current leader of the Mafdal.
While Eitam is "non political" who "fell out of the sky" to the leadership of Mafdal, Orlev is a long-time Mafdal member with strong support among the "center" members and a veteran of inner-politics.

On February 14 2005, Eitam was suspended from the party chairmainship by the Mafdal internal court, after he left the government against the center decision.

Eitam is one of the most interesting people in Israel.
Given the campaign against him, Eitam has decided to leave the army and is commonly regarded as contender for party head of the National Religious Party, someone who might extract it from mothballs and light a fire under it.
In the past week or so, Eitam - who is still in uniform - has been speaking his mind more freely and with less fear of retaliation (since he is leaving anyway).

The wife of Brigadier-General Efi Eitam Fein claimed, in the media, that her husband is not being promoted to the rank of full general, because he wears a yarmulke.
Fein said that in the entire history of the IDF, there was never a religious general from the combat units, and that the deferment of her husband's promotion has no connection to his part in what is called the Givati Affair.
In the beginning of the Intifadah, when Efi Fein was the commander of the Givati brigade, soldiers and officers complained that he had ordered them to use physical force against the Palestinians and that he himself had used such force.

Efi Eitam held the sole key to fundamentally changing the sad state of affairs in which Israel finds itself, thanks to Ariel Sharon.
Eitam should have ignored the justified criticism directed at the Haredi parties, established a unified religious front in coordination with Ichud Leumi, and allowed Sharon to form a secular government with Shinui and the Labor party.
It is now ludicrous to hear the heads of the Mafdal talking about the historic progress involved in the alliance with (anti-Semitic) Lapid, thus giving them (and Ichud Leumi) the right to vote against the Palestinian State.
