		The Efik are a people located in (A republic in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea; gained independence from Britain in 1960; most populous African country) Nigeria and (A republic on the western coast of central Africa; was under French and British control until 1960) Cameroon.
		Eventually, they broke this rule and Atai killed them both, as well as caused strife, (The event of dying or departure from life) death and (The waging of armed conflict against an enemy) war between their children.
		Abassi and Atai were so disgusted that they withdrew from the affairs of their descendents.

		Although thousands of the Efik race have over the years graduated in various fields of learning, the graduation ceremony coming up this month, will be quite spectacular as the eight students will be the first to have read the language in the university.
		Excited by the unprecedented ceremony, the grand partriarch of Efik Kingdom, Professor Nta Elijah Henshaw, the Obong of Calabar, has said that plans were in the pipeline for the language to be made compulsory for natives of the race at the primary and secondary levels.
		The apex traditional ruler of the Efik Kingdom, has said that his palace was initiating a scholarship scheme to assist interested students of the area, wishing to study the language.

		This was the place where, according to local Cross River histories, an Efik leader and his entire retinue were captured by British ships; the information contained in the Cuban chants documents their final destination in Havana.
		This information gave rational to the seemingly fabulous story of a complex secret society being recreated under conditions of slavery; it was possible because the leaders and their intimate circle were brought into the context of Havana, a cosmopolitan city with a large free fl population, among which were already many Cross River people.
		The fact that both Efik Ekpe members and Cuban Abakua members recognize themselves in the other’s language and ritual practice suggests the importance of ancestral memory and tradition in creating local ethnic identities that resist alienation by maintaining social cohesiveness.

		The Efik People are an offshoot of the Ibibio, Located in the lower Cross River section of Cross River State, Nigeria.
		The Efik and The Ibibio were some of the few cultures able to resist the British colonization and it was not until after World War I that the British were able to gain any substantial power in their area.
		Along with the use in secret societies the Nsbidi language became an integrated part of Efik Culture and is found on tombstones, ritual fans, body and ground painting, religious rituals, and cultural celebrations.
