The orchestra has experienced steady artistic growth under the direction of distinguished leaders such as Ernst Hoffmann (1936-47), Efrem Kurtz (1948-54), Ferenc Fricsay (1954), Leopold Stokowski (1955-61), Sir John Barbirolli (1961-67), Andre Previn (1967-69), Lawrence Foster (1971-78), Sergiu Comissiona (1979-88) and Christoph Eschenbach (1988-99).
Maestro Hans Graf, who took the podium in September 2001, is the Houston Symphony's 15th music director.
The orchestra came of age in the 1940s as Maestros Hoffmann and Kurtz hired strong professional musicians who remained part of the orchestra for 30 or more years.

Kurtz' conducting debut came when he stood in at the last minute for an ill Artur Nikisch to accompany the dancer Isadora Duncan.
From 1924 to 1933 he conducted the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1928, Kurtz was enagaged by Anna Pavlova to accompany her dancing, which he did until her death in 1931.
Kurtz later moved to the United States of America, and became a citizen of that country in 1944.

The year is 1940 something, and European conductor Efrem Kurtz, is slated to guest conduct the Buffalo Philharmonic.
They are playing the Leonore Overture and after Mac (my former teacher) plays the flute solo, Kurtz stops the orchestra.
Mac brought up this issue in flute class since Efrem Kurtz is appearing in nearby Syracuse, conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

Efrem Kurtz was conductor from 1948 to 1954, and there was then a brief period with Ferenc Fricsay as conductor before Leopold Stokowski took over in 1955.

Since he has met Prokofiev in St. Petersburg Conservatory (Prokofiev was about to graduate when Kurtz entered, and Kurtz was too shy and unaccomplished yet to approach the young star), he became passionate about Prokofiev's music, and carried this passion till the end.
I was lucky enough to attend one of the various venues of Maestro Kurtz at Lisboa.
