The Kingdom of Kent was a kingdom of Jutes in southeast England, one of the seven traditional kingdoms of the so-called Anglo-Saxon heptarchy.
Kent was the first kingdom in England to be established by the Germanic invaders, and its early emergence allowed it to become relatively powerful in the early Anglo-Saxon period.
Kent seems to have had its greatest power under Æthelbert at the beginning of the 7th century: Ethelbert was recognized as Bretwalda until his death in 616, and was the first Anglo-Saxon king to accept Christianity, as well as the first to introduce a written code of laws.

Egbert II of Kent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
King Offa of Mercia installed Heaberht as a client king in Kent in 764; perhaps Egbert was installed at the same time, but he was certainly king by 765, when he was named in a charter.
By around the year 772, however, it appears that Offa was attempting to rule Kent directly, and this provoked a rebellion under Egbert.
A bloody battle was fought at Otford in 776, and although the outcome was not recorded, the fact that Kent seems to have remained independent for several years afterward suggests that Egbert was victorious.

 Greg Bard's Genealogical Records
Egbert laid the foundations for the ascendancy of Wessex among the English kingdoms.
The argument that Ealhmund was a king of Kent (and therefore not of the West Saxon dynasty) is not a good one, for the Kentish monarchy was very unstable during the entire period, and had a succession of kings that were either of obscure origin, or were princes from foreign dynasties.
Given the chronology of his reign, Egbert of Wessex was probably born during the reign of Egbert II of Kent (764-79).
