Topic: Egbert of York

Egbert of Northumbria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Egbert (died 729) was a novice in the Benedictine monastery of Lindisfarne in Northumbria in Anglo-Saxon England.
A vision in 688 (Bede) and his vow led Egbert to become a monk on the island of Iona, in the distant Inner Hebrides, where resided from 716 and gently persuaded the monks there to adhere to the Roman form of computing Easter, which had been adopted at the Synod of Whitby (664).
Saint Egbert ought not to be confused with the later Egbert, Archbishop of York.

Egbert, Archbishop of York - Ökumenisches Heiligenlexikon
Subscribe to the New Advent Catholic newsletter Egbert, Archbishop of York Archbishop of York, England, son of Eata, brother of the Northumbrian King Eadbert and cousin of King Ceolwulf, to whom the Venerable Bede dedicated his history; date of birth unknown; d.
The restoration of the pallium to Egbert increased his power and authority over the Northern bishops, who thus became his suffragans; and his power was still more strengthened in 738 when his brother Eadbert succeeded to the throne of Northumbria.
Egbert was thus placed in a position which enabled him to carry out many reforms, and in the performance of these he proved himself a strict disciplinarian; but though stern when correction and rebuke were justly deserved, he was remarkable for his sweetness and gentleness.

Egbert, cousin of King Ceolwulf of Northumbria, to whom Bede dedicated his history, succeeded Wilfrid II as Bishop of Northumbria in AD 732.
Egbert was a stern disciplinarian and it was soon after his consecration to the see that Bede addressed to him his well-known letter, setting forth the disorder and corruption of the whole northern diocese.
He was probably the first to introduce of the parochial system in the north and was certainly the founder of the famous monastic school of York and of the library connected with it.

 Ethelbert, Archbishop of York
He was a kinsman of his predecessor Archbishop Egbert (brother to Eadberht, King of Northumbria) and a pupil in the school which Egbert founded at York.
Even after Egbert became archbishop, he reserved to himself the duty of lecturing on the New Testament, while he entrusted the work of explaining the Old Testament to Ethelbert.
In 766 Archbishop Egbert died, and Ethelbert was unanimously chosen to succeed him.

Before the Norman Conquest | British History Online
While Severus was in York, however, the city almost attained a metropolitan status for he brought with him not only his two sons but the entire court; and, as the heading of the rescript shows, even routine legal business of the empire was then conducted from the city.
York, therefore, although undoubtedly important as a centre of communications, lay near the western frontier of Edwin's Northumbrian kingdom until he succeeded in overthrowing the British kingdom of Elmet to the south and west of the city.
The achievement of 8th-century York has little connexion with these bald records of revolution and disaster, though the work of Archbishop Egbert, founder of the great school and library, cannot have been unconnected with the fact that he was brother to a king.

§7. Bede’s "Letter to Egbert of York". V. Latin Writings in England to the Time of Alfred. Vol. 1. From the ...
The letter to Egbert of York, perhaps the latest document we possess from Bede’s pen, deserves a special and separate mention.
It is, in brief, a pastoral epistle; and it gives (what we could only gather indirectly from his other works) the clearest evidence of Bede’s lively interest in the religious life of the people at large, and his wise and noble conception of the duties of a Christian minister.
His advice to Egbert is prompted by “a real and unassuming spirit of humility and affection,” and it is thoroughly practical in its statement, alike of the abuses which need reform, and of the means of reforming them.

The fact is that, very shortly before Alcuin left England for ever, the Scandinavians had begun that desolating series of raids upon this country which ended by exterminating the learning and literature of Northumbria and paralysed intellectual effort all over the land.
In an often quoted poem on the saints of York, Alcuin enumerates the principal authors whose works were to be found in the library collected there by Egbert and Albert.
Within a generation after the poem was written, that library had ceased to exist; and so had that earlier treasury of books at Wearmouth which Benedict Biscop commended in the last years of his life to the special care of his monks.

His greatest achievement, perhaps, was the founding of a school attached to his cathedral church and the training of competent teachers for it; it became for the north of England what Canterbury was for the south and among its teachers were Egbert's successor Albert (Ethelbert), and the great pupil of the latter, Alcuin.
The latter and Egbert's anonymous biographer speak of his admirable qualities in the warmest terms.
