The most obvious feature on the island of Egilsay is the magnificent church of St Magnus, a unique survivor of a group of churches of a type marked by a single or double tower, that once stood in the islands.
Eventually, Hakon became jealous of Magnus' popularity and a meeting was arrranged on Egilsay in April 1115 to settle matters between the men.
Before his death, Magnus forgave his murderers, and instructed the cook to 'hew him a mighty blow to the head that he was killed as a lord and not a thief'.

It was on the island of Egilsay that Magnus, Earl of Orkney, was murdered at Eastertime in the year 1115.
It is likely that the meeting of the cousins, Haakon and Magnus was arranged to take place on Egilsay because the island was of some importance in the Norse period.
Together with Birsay, it was the residence of the Bishop of Orkney and it is believed that the fine round towered church of St Magnus on Egilsay was erected at the instigation of Bishop William the Old at the end of the first half of the 12th Century.

A five-year-old Egilsay boy is hoping he will get his own ferry service so he can learn alongside his classmates ­ but it could mean the end of the line for an island school.
Dave and Margaret Basford, who are both in their 50s, have been campaigning for three years to get ferry times changed to enable their grandson, Jordan, who lives with them, to attend Rousay Primary School, on a full-time basis.
The other two days he is taught in Egilsay school ­ where he is the only pupil ­ when a teacher from Rousay travels across to the island.

 Trumland Reserve
On Egilsay, the RSPB has a reserve the principle aim of which is to increase the number of breeding corncrakes by managing farmland specifically with them in mind.
Whilst you are unlikely to see this elusive bird, you may be able to hear their peculiar call if you stay overnight – the male generally only “sings” in the darkest hours.
There is an information display about the RSPB reserve on Egilsay in the island’s pier waiting room, as well as a leaflet with a map showing the nature trail.

While ferries to most of Orkney's northern islands operate from Kirkwall, the ferry to Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre operates from Tingwall on the east coast of West Mainland, north of Finstown.
A glance at the timetable suggests that the services offered by the Eynhallow are at least as important in linking Rousay to the smaller islands of Wyre and Egilsay as they are in connecting the three islands to Mainland.
Getting to Egilsay involves sailing further around Rousay and into Rousay Sound to the slipway at Skaill.

The underlying problem for Egilsay, as for many other small Scottish islands, is that there are not enough pupils to keep its own school viable.
A report to the education committee concluded that keeping the school open on Egilsay was not feasible and that better arrangements needed to be put in place to allow Egilsay pupils to get to Rousay.

Continue down the unclassified road, past the school on your left and through the gate (the cenotaph to St Magnus is just ahead, on your right).
After this point the 'road' can get quite boggy in places but it is this wetland habitat that provides such excellent conditions for Egilsay's rare birdlife.

Having failed to reach an agreement, he sought help from King Eystein II of Norway, who granted him the earldom and he ruled jointly with Haakon until 1116, when war broke out and Haakon took Magnus prisoner.
He was kept on the island of Egilsay and executed on April 16, 1117.
It was said that Magnus had prayed for the souls of his executioners, and his remains were taken to Kirkwall, where his nephew, Ragnald III, built St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall in his memory.

The crossing to Egilsay produced Grey Seals and the first of several superb Great Northern Divers, lingering on their way back to Iceland.
On arrival on the Egilsay jetty we were met by about a dozen inquisitive Common Seals and the island's RSPB warden who told us what to look out for even though there were no Corncrakes this year.
Although we had good weather all week, our day on Egilsay was particularly fine and so the wait for the return ferry by the gently lapping water in glorious sunshine was most relaxing.
