Eglin Air Force Base Guide - Eglin History
Eglin was selected for the testing mission, and on June 27, 1940, the U.S. Forestry Service ceded to the War Department the Choctawhatchee National Forest, consisting of some 384,000 acres.
Eglin also became a pioneer in missile development when, in early 1946, the First Experimental Guided Missiles Group was activated to develop the techniques for missile launching and handling; establish training programs; and monitor the development of a drone or pilotless aircraft capability to support the Atomic Energy Commission tests, Operation CROSSROADS, at Eniwetok.
On August 1, 1968, the Air Proving Ground Center was redesignated the Armament Development and Test Center to centralize responsibility for research, development, test and evaluation, and initial acquisition of non-nuclear munitions for the Air Force.

Eglin Air Force Base and Sea Turtle Nesting: A Success Story
Eglin is unique because it has both terrestrial and marine species under its supervision and the base has developed an aggressive natural resources plan to manage them (Hardesty and Kindell 1997).
Eglin AFB owns and manages two stretches of beach on Santa Rosa Island: a 6.4 km section which receives limited public usage and is known as "Okaloosa Island," and a 21 km section of federal beach on which access is restricted.
Eglin is providing the educational tools to remedy this problem by working within a network of public nonprofit groups, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to protect nesting sites and educate the public about the sea turtles that are present.

ATSDR - PHA - Eglin Air Force Base (a/k/a USAF Eglin Air Force Base Armament Division), Eglin Air Force Base, Okaloosa ...
Because Eglin Air Force Base (AFB) does not have comprehensive records that document exactly when, where, and the quantity of chemicals sprayed throughout the base, ATSDR modeled potential air exposures resulting from spraying activities at the Herbicide Exposure Unit–the area on Eglin AFB believed to be sprayed with the greatest quantities of potentially toxic chemicals.
Although aerial spraying at Eglin AFB did not occur continuously, this assumption is not expected to bias predictions of annual average concentrations, because spraying reportedly occurred during all seasons of the year, during various times of day, and during a wide range of meteorological conditions.
ATSDR notes again that actual ambient air concentrations of these chemicals were probably considerably lower than the upper-bound estimates shown in Table B-1, because a large portion of the chemicals undoubtedly deposited on the ground surface before reaching locations beyond the Eglin AFB property line.
