Transit Toronto - Content: Network 2011 -- To think of what could have been.
The per-mile cost of subway construction was rising, and proving difficult to meet, particularly during the onset of the 1982 recession.
At the time, it was thought that ICTS lines could serve as the rapid transit lines of the suburbs, and a major cross-town line from Scarborough to Etobicoke along the Hydro right-of-way north of Finch Avenue was seen as the next project.
The current subways continue to carry people to their jobs, and the system is recovering from the ridership hit it took during the early part of this decade.

Transit Toronto - Content: The Eglinton West Subway
The Eglinton Subway was first proposed by the Network 2011 rapid transit expansion proposal, but not initially as a subway.
Once the Sheppard Subway and the Downtown Relief Line were built, then the Eglinton Busway would be converted to a full-fledged subway, assuming that traffic demand warrented it.
The Eglinton line would not immediately provide a link to the Airport, but it would serve established moderate-density neighbourhoods in the city of York as well as the proposed York City Centre.

Eglinton Avenue existed alongside the corridor, so it was decided that the lands would be used for a future widening of Eglinton Avenue and a possible Eglinton rapid transit line which could fit along the corridor lands.
An Eglinton West subway line was approved and construction was commenced in the early 1990's, but due to funding shortages, construction of it was halted.
The Eglinton West Subway, which would run from the Spadina Subway, along Eglinton Avenue, making use of the transportation corridor, was approved by Metro in 1994, and construction was started.

The Toronto (TTC) Subway Turns Fifty: Subway Milestones - Expansion
With demand for the subway high and with the tremendous post-war growth being experienced throughout the city, it was clear that expansion was necessary.
Original subway plans had included a Queen Street line, but much of the city's growth was taking place further to the north and Bloor street was already becoming clogged with traffic.
In the west it was extended to Kipling Station and in the east to Kennedy Station.

Later in that decade, the rising cost of subway construction and the awareness of the limitations of buses reversed that decision; Toronto is now one of the few North American cities to retain its streetcars through the 20th century, and is now considering expansion of the service.
And in 1980, the Bloor-Danforth Line was extended once again, to the current termini of Kipling Station on the west end and Kennedy Station on the east.
Instead, a proposed extension on the Danforth end of the Bloor-Danforth line was built in 1985 as the Scarborough RT (light rail transit) line, which went from Kennedy to McCowan Station.

The original Toronto subway tile colour scheme was generated by combining a number of background colours with four trim colours.
The original Vitrolite glass tiling was replaced during the 1980s and 1990s in all stations except Eglinton, resulting in an unfortunate hodgepodge of materials, colours, and typefaces.

Security staff stay on duty after closing, and even after all the passenger trains have finished their runs and returned to the shipyards, the tunnels may still be populated by a variety of maintenance vehicles, including a vacuum car and two tunnel-washer cars.
The tunnels between Eglinton West, St. Clair West and Dupont are long, curvy deathtraps which alternate between square and tube tunnels and offer no great rewards, aside from a fair number of emergency exits.

Toronto Transit Commission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As of 2004, there are four rapid transit lines (three are referred to as "subways", while a fourth is mostly elevated; see Toronto Subway and RT), with a total of 69 stations, as well as 149 connecting "surface" routes (buses and streetcars).
In 1954, the TTC adopted its present name, opened its first subway line, and greatly expanded its service area to cover the newly formed municipality of Metropolitan Toronto (which eventually became the enlarged city of Toronto).
In fact, some subway stops are periodically entirely "repainted" on the inside using large plastic decals, to the wishes of a paying corporate advertiser; this is also done with individual buses and all cars in a particular subway train.

The risk with the big plans -- the Greater Toronto Authority and the Hydro corridors and the subways -- the risk with that stuff is we forget the bread and butter, and that's the lesson we should have learned from the 1990s.
