Egmont was naturally indignant at the treatment he had received, while the terrors of the Inquisition were steadily rousing the people to a state of frenzied excitement.

Egmont Key is bounded by Egmont Channel to the north and by Southwest Channel to the south.

The first recorded request for a lighthouse at Egmont Key came in a petition to the Secretary of the Treasury in December 1833 from residents of Sanibel Island.
The first lighthouse on Egmont Key was built under a contract between the United States and Francis A. Gibbons of Baltimore, Maryland and was signed on July 1, 1847.
Egmont Key light was originally intended to be a one-keeper station, but only two months after its completion Sherrod Edwards agreed to take a $100 per month pay reduction (his pay was originally $500 per year) in exchange for the station being provided with an assistant keeper who would be paid $200 per year.

When Fernando Alvarez de Toledo, duke of Alva, was sent in 1567 to restore order in the country, Egmont and another Flemish nobleman, Philip de Montmorency, count of Hoorn (1518-1568), remained there in spite of warnings from Prince William to leave the country, and Alva had them imprisoned.
Goethe used incidents in Egmont's life as the basis for his tragedy “Egmont” in 1788, for which Ludwig van Beethoven wrote incidental music and “The Egmont Overture” in 1810.
