Egmont has a higher death toll than any other mountain in New Zealand, as inexperienced climbers often underestimate its dangers.

Egmont National Park is located in the central west coast of the North Island.
Egmont is the European name, but is being phased out in favour of the original name Taranaki.

Its now 100 years since Egmont National Park was created, so preparation of the plan to coincide with the parks centennial celebrations was timely.
The Egmont National Park Management Plan review was approved by the New Zealand Conservation Authority in February 2002.
Considerable work has gone into protection of the park since its inception and it is hoped that the reviewed and innovative plan will provide sound management direction for the park for the next ten years and beyond.

Nowhere does the Egmont National Park come closer to a main road than it does at Lucy's Gully, giving access to walks over the Kaitake Range and to the park's 300 kilometre track network.
