PR Hans Gal and Egon Wellesz
Wellesz, by contrast, was a monarchist and supporter of the corporate state (“Ständestaat”) and therefore had little to do with the left-wing Free Austrian Movement and Austrian Centre in London formed by the Austrian emigrés.
Wellesz, by contrast, would have been very happy to accept a professorship at the University of Vienna, but the position was occupied by Erich Schenk, who had been instrumental in aryanizing Guido Adler’s library after 1938.
Wellesz, on the other hand, was close to Alban Berg and Anton Webern and later, to a lesser extent, to Arnold Schönberg and he was thus an integral part of the Second Viennese School.

EGON WELLESZ, AN AUSTRIAN SYMPHONIST IN BRITAIN by Paul Conway   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Wellesz later described this first lesson with Schoneberg as "an unforgettable experience" and it seems reasonable to regard the Expressionist leanings of his late symphonies as a mature reflection and assimilation of the teachings of his old Master.
Wellesz was a generous and encouraging teacher, as his ex-pupil John Veale testifies, imploring aspiring composers to be true to their own style even though it could be the very antithesis of his own.
Wellesz is the "Fourth Man" of the Second Viennese School and it is to be hoped that one day soon his music will be regarded with the same respect which the works of his venerated compatriots command.

His father Samú Wellesz was in the textile business; his mother Ilona Lovenyi met and married her husband in Vienna after they had each come from the Hungarian part of the empire.
Wellesz inherited his musical inclinations from his mother, who had once studied the piano with Carl Frühling, to whom she sent her son.
Wellesz's nine symphonies earned him the compliment he most cherished, that of being Bruckner's heir, and it may be that in exile his sense of his musical heritage was intensified.

 Festspielsommer
Egon Wellesz’s works for the stage, his four ballets and five operas, were created in a relatively brief period, 1918 to 1931, in the long life of this venerable Austrian composer.
For instance, when evolving his ballets Wellesz was markedly influenced by new form languages in the art of dance, the Ballets Russes, the combination of pantomime and expressive dance.
The ancient drama provided Wellesz with the basis for developing his own individual language: a declamatory conciseness for the large-scale choral scenes, lyrical and dramatic intensity for the tragic individual fates.

Egon Wellesz | Symphony No. 3
At first predominantly influenced by Bruckner and Mahler, Wellesz abandoned tonality under Schoenberg’s guidance and turned to an expressive, gesticulating musical language without ever adopting the harsh twelve-tone technique.
The main theme, exposed in unison, is made especially poignant with its large intervals, whereas the side movement, which serves as continuation, has a more songlike character with its recurring triplets.
As he wrote the slow second movement, Wellesz states he “was carried along by the ideas of transfiguration in Austrian music," which led to broad cantilenas and hymn-like brass chorales.

EGON WELLESZ: The long-awaited world premiere of the third symphony triumphs in Vienna.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Wellesz lost the impetus to get his Third premièred: as late as the mid-1960s when the Sixth Symphony was nearing its first performance, he wrote that, as far as the Third was concerned, "we have to wait".
By the time of Wellesz's death in November 1974, the Third was his only example in the genre to have remained unpublished and unperformed.
Wellesz sang along with gusto and hammered out the frequently violent outbursts in the score on his piano, holding down the sustaining pedal for most of the time!

Wellesz was born into a middle-class home: his father was a businessman in the textile industry, his mother came from Hungary and was very musical.
At the age of 19 Egon Wellesz became a pupil of Schoenberg and soon came into contact with the progressive circle of Viennese modernists: with Rilke, Loos, Kokoschka (who painted a portrait of him in 1911) and Emmy Stross, who in 1908 was to become his wife.
Egon Wellesz’s “second life” so to speak was as equally important as his composing activity.

 Wellesz: Symphonies No 4, 6 & 7 / Rabl, Vienna Radio So | ArkivMusic
Egon Wellesz achieved a measure of success in his adopted homeland of Britain as a distinguished musicologist, but like so many Jewish refugees forced to flee the continent after Hitler's rise to power, the Austrian Wellesz was a composer of distinction who remained true to his Viennese roots.
The thrust of his argument is always easy to follow because while the thematic material may be atonal, its clear rhythmic foundation, easily recognized repetitions, and the distinction of the tunes themselves always makes it perfectly clear where the musical argument is going.
As for Wellesz, Orfeo also has released his marvelous pre-exile opera Die Bakchantinnen, and together with this disc they mark him out as an artist of the first rank.
