  Species Name
The Snowy Egret, Egretta thula, in a tidal mudflat.
Egretta thula is a member of the Order Ciconiiformes (Herons and storks) which encompasses the long-necked wading birds.

Auk, The: Effects of body size and sex on foraging territoriality of the Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) in Japan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
ABSTRACT.-I studied the characteristics of foraging territoriality in the Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and effects of body size and sex on territoriality.
Sixty-eight birds were captured and sexed, and foraging behavior (usage of area, defense rate, and foraging efficiency) of 26 birds identified by color bands was observed in detail for 3 years.
THE LITTLE EGRET (Egretta garzetta) forages in a variety of social contexts, ranging from solitary foraging to large flock foraging.

From 1992 to 1997 helminth collections were examined from 67 birds of 6 species: Botaurus stellaris (bittern), 3 individuals; Nycticorax nycticorax (night heron), 6; Egretta alba (great white egret), 1; Egretta garzetta (little egret), 16; Ardea cinerea (grey heron), 31; Ardea purpurea (purple heron), 10.
Egretta garzetta: 8 out of 16 birds infected, with 1-3 individuals per bird.
Ardea cinerea and Egretta alba are invaded by Pygidiopsis genata, Cryptocotyle concavum, Cryptocotyle lingua and Maritrema subdolum, a clear indication that on the Swan Islands thay prefer sea habitats.

Mystery Egret, Cupsogue New York - 4 June 2004   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The leg color seems to rule out juvenile Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea), which is white, has blue facial skin, blue base to the bill and may have head plumes.
For comparison here are a couple of shots of a breeding-plumage Little Egret (Egretta garzetta garzetta) taken in Italy in mid April 2004.
Overall I don't think there is reason to consider Western Reef Heron for the NY bird but it is good to keep an open mind and learn more about the identification of egrets at the same time.

As its name implies, Intermediate Egret measures around 90 cm, which is the intermediate size between the Great Egret (Egretta alba) and the smaller Little (Egretta garzetta) and Cattle Egrets (Bubulcus ibis).
One can recognise an Intermediate Egret by its all-white plumage, shorter neck compared to Great Egret, and thick set bill varying from yellowish in non breeding birds to red/flish in breeding adults.
