Egyptus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Egyptus and Pharaoh are described as righteous people, and Pharaoh is said to have ruled Egypt wisely during his reign.
Later she gave birth to Pharaoh, (by one of her brothers, either Mizraim or Canaan) and he became the first king of either of the Egypts, or he may have reunited the land and became king.
There is some agreement among religious scholars that "Egyptus" was perhaps not the real name of these women, but was a later substitute for the original name, under the cultural tradition of retroactively renaming ancestors after the homelands, circumstances or descriptions, rather than by their given names.

Pharaoh (Book of Abraham) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to the Mormon text, Pharaoh is the son of Egyptus, daughter of Ham, son of Noah, who rules Egypt righteously during his entire reign.
His father has been assumed to have been either Mizraim or Canaan, both brothers to Egyptus and sons to Ham, son of Noah.
This would mean Egyptus founded Egypt, and before the birth of her brother (Mizraim) the land became divided.

From this descent sprang all the Egyptians, and thus the blood of the Canaanites was preserved in the land.
The Mormon scriptures, then, indicate that Pharaoh and all the Egyptians were descendants of the younger Egyptus and Canaan, a brother and sister, both children of Ham, and at least one of them, probably both, the children of the elder Egyptus.
The curse of being a "servant of servants" is the curse that was pronounced upon Ham's son Canaan.

This could be important because Egyptus, the wife of Ham, is listed as being a "partaker of the blood of the Canaanites" (Abraham 1:21) but not as a descendant of Cain.

The issue of skin color of Egyptus I (wife of Ham), Egyptus II (daughter of Ham) and Pharaoh is also interesting because we learn from other scriptures that the daughters of Noah's sons, apparently including Ham, were "fair" (Moses 8:14).

When we look at the word "Egyptus" we note the "Canaanite" or common old Semitic combination of g-p-t (the vowels change constantly, but the root meaning of the consonant combination always remains the same) designates something forbidden.

Names of the form P3-di DN are common in Egypt, but are first attested during the eleventh century B.C. The only occurrence of the Egyptian equivalent of Potiphar is found on Cairo stele 65444, which dates to the Egyptian 21st dynasty (1069-945 B.C.).
In Abraham 1:23 we read: "The land of Egypt being first discovered by a woman, who was the daughter of Ham, and the daughter of Egyptus, which in the Chaldean signifies Egypt, which signifies that which is forbidden." First, Egyptus is not a Chaldean word, but Greek, and does not mean "forbidden" in any language.
The Greek "Egyptus" apparently derives from Egyptian hwt-k3-pth, "the house of the ka of Ptah," which was the name of a temple of Ptah in Memphis.

Don't get me wrong here either, I do not believe the play is racist -- in fact, the woman playing Egyptus is by far the most talented member of the cast and the character's role is very strong and likeable.
