USS Greeneville (SSN-772) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ehime Maru memorial is located in Kakaako Waterfront Park in Honolulu Hawaii.
On 25 November, Ehime Maru was again lifted, towed back out to sea, and scuttled in 8,500 ft (2,600 m) of water south of Barbers Point, witnessed by three of the crewmembers' families.
A memorial in Hawaii to Ehime Maru and her dead has been constructed.

The Ehime Maru, which was used to train high school students how to fish, collided on Feb. 9 with the nuclear submarine USS Greeneville and sank about 9 miles south of the island of Oahu.
Then the Ehime Maru could be lifted "out of the mud" by its bow and moved to a firm, flat spot not far away, Marsh said.
The Ehime Maru would not be carried to shallow water with those cables because their only purpose was to get the bow out of the sea floor, Marsh said.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? ** Analyst Says Media Reports on USS Greeneville to be erroneous ** [Free Republic]
The Yamato-like prow of the Ehime Maru struck the port side of the USS Greeneville, indenting the hull to create the unusual parabolic score marks around the linear keel skid mark, which was discussed in my original analysis.
The plans and photos of the Ehime Maru obtained by the writer show that the structure depicted hanging from her stern in the Navy video was in the design plan.
Ehime Maru climbed over the back of USS Greeneville and was gutted by the vertical fin of the tail assembly as the submarine passed under her running horizontally and leveling through less that 10 feet of water.

 Ehime Maru Environmental Assessment Completed
Before it is moved, Ehime Maru's deck will be cleared to the extent possible of cargo nets, fishing hooks and long lines, rafts and other obstacles that might impact the marine environment.
Once Ehime Maru is stabilized at the shallow-water site, a team of U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy-trained Japanese divers will thoroughly search all safely accessible areas of the vessel to recover the missing crew members, other personal effects and certain unique characteristics of the ship, such as its nameplate and anchors.
The structural damage to Ehime Maru may be greater than anticipated and thus pose a safety risk to recovery personnel or prevent the vessel to be moved intact.

The result of the analyses was that the Ehime Maru could withstand a static steady state lift, but that the dynamic effect imparted by ocean swells could be a problem.
Instead of using linear winches to lift the Ehime Maru from the shallow water sea floor, SUPSALV and Crowley opted to use ballast water to accomplish the lift.
This was done by ballasting the barge down to a draft of 20 feet at the stern and connecting the lower lift frame assembly to four chains that were suspended from the rear of the barge.
