At the helm of the project since he founded it in 1974 is Ehsan Yarshater, an eminent Iranian scholar with dignity and dedication that place him in the elite of the University’s academic community.
Yarshater conceived the encyclopedia in 1973 when he became frustrated that he could not send his students to any one reliable and comprehensive source for their research on topics related to Iranian culture and history.
Yarshater realized that the problem would only compound, especially given the length of the project, which is anticipated to run about 50 years in total.

From 1986-90 she worked at the Middle East Institute of Columbia University as Coordinator of its Outreach Program, which was designed to bring accurate knowledge of Middle Eastern affairs to students, teachers, and the general public.
At a time when, in spite of current financial constraints on bold and innovative scholarly projects, the Encyclopedia is set firmly on its course and its unique contribution recognized worldwide, her irreparable loss is even more poignantly felt by those who have known her crucial but unobtrusive contribution towards this very success.

Dick Davis, Translator & Author - Persian Literature, Mage Publishers-Books
Some 30 years ago Yarshater rendered into elegant modern Persian prose the opening narratives of the epic, and now Dick Davis, the foremost translator of Persian literature into English, has translated those tales and added two additional narratives taken directly from the epic poetry.
Volume 1, Ehsan Yarshater's The Lion and the Throne (CH, May'98), was translated by Davis largely from an earlier Persian prose translation.
Davis translated the present volume directly from the original text and presents it to the reader as a felicitous mixture of prose and verse.
