Eiders: Wildlife Notebook Series - Alaska Department of Fish and Game
Males of the four eider species are easy to distinguish by their fl and white patterns and areas of soft vibrant color, unique to eiders.
The common eider (male) is the only eider with a fl cap extending to the forehead and around the eye and divided on the crown by a white streak originating from the hind neck.
Common eiders nest near driftwood or clumps of grass on barrier islands, sandy beaches, and on islands in tundra ponds, often in association with gull colonies.

Hinterland Who's Who - Common Eider
Eiders feed during the day by diving to the bottom in waters from 3 to 20 m deep to take mussels, clams, scallops, sea urchins, starfish, and crabs, which are swallowed whole and crushed in the large gizzard.
Eider ducks in most areas recovered dramatically at rates of up to 12 percent per year; for example, in Maine, the number of nests increased from fewer than 100 in one colony in 1910 to more than 20 000 nests in over 75 colonies by 1970.
This is because the eiders present on the Newfoundland and Labrador coasts and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during the winter are not local breeders: they belong to larger Arctic breeding populations.
