The base consisted of approximately 600 acres with housing for 108 officers and 330 enlisted.
The Air Force is created On Sept. 18, 1947, the Air Force gained its independence from the Army as a separate branch with President Truman's signing of the National Security Act of 1947.
Air Force records show it dropped from the inventory due to a ground accident in May 1955, although no available evidence suggests it was fixed after November or that it was ever in any accidents.

In accordance with the new Air Force Wing Organization Plan, it was established as the 97th Bombardment Wing, Very Heavy, on December 1, 1947.
It was then assigned to 15th Air Force, attached to the Yukon Sector of the Alaskan Air Command.

As of the 2000 census, the population of the base is 5,400.
The base is home to the 354th Fighter Wing which reports to the U.S. Pacific Air Forces and flies the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
In the base the population is spread out with 40.8% under the age of 18, 16.6% from 18 to 24, 41.2% from 25 to 44, 1.2% from 45 to 64, and 0.2% who are 65 years of age or older.

Eielson is located 28 miles south of Fairbanks and is the primary Air Force base in interior Alaska.
Early nicknames for the base were "Satellite" or "Mile 26" by some workers and "26-Mile Strip" by the brass, probably because it was exactly 26 miles from Fairbanks, past the runway, to the base's gate, even though the north end of the base was only 23 miles from Fairbanks.
On Feb. 4, 1948, the Air Force changed the name of 26-Mile Post to Eielson Air Force Base in honor of an Arctic aviation pioneer, Carl Ben Eielson, a famous "bush pilot" in the Interior during the 1920s.

In 1988, the U.S. Air Force initiated a study at Hill AFB to examine the potential of bioventing to remediate JP-4 jet fuel-contaminated soils.
Based on early successes at warm-weather sites, the Air Force and the U.S. EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) became interested in using bioventing in cold climates.
In summer 1991, the Air Force and NRMRL began operating a bioventing system at Eielson, using a blower to inject air into the contaminated soil at a rate of 25 ft³/min.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. Lisa Murkowski tonight said she was pleased with the Base Realignment and Closure Commission’s (BRAC) decision that Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks not be reduced to warm status as had been recommended by the Department of Defense.
Rather than accept DOD’s recommendation to reduce Eielson to a ‘warm status,’ the Commission adopted an amendment that will allow the Air Force to move Eielson’s A-10 aircraft to Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, and into reserve while leaving the F-16s and other aircraft in Fairbanks.
Murkowski added that she was heartened that the Commission added report language to ensure that the closure not be implemented immediately to allow all agencies that use the airport to work toward a smooth transition.
