Nearly all blues music is played to a 4/4 time signature, which means that there are four beats in every measure or bar and each quarter note is equal to one beat.
The I chord dominates the first four bars; the IV chord typically appears in the second four bars (although in the example below, Elmore James introduces it in the first four bars); and the V chord is played in the third four bars.
In a 12-bar blues, the first and second lines are repeated, and the third line is a response to them—often with a twist.

Early forms of the blues evolved in the Southern United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, using simple instruments such as acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica.
Melodically, blues music is marked by the use of the flattened third and dominant seventh (so called blue notes) of the associated major scale.
What is now recognizable as the standard 12 bar blues form with A A1 B form is documented from oral history and sheet music as appearing in African-American communities throughout the region along the lower Mississippi River in the decade before 1910 (and performed by white bands in New Orleans at least since 1908).

 TBH, A Brief History
Alan Lomax states that the blues tradition was considered to be a masculine discipline (although some of the first blues songs heard by whites were sung by 'lady' blues singers like Mamie Smith and Bessie Smith) and not many fl women were to be found singing the blues in the juke-joints.
Blues lyrics are often intensely personal, frequently contain sexual references and often deal with the pain of betrayal, desertion, and unrequited love (Kamien 519) or with unhappy situations such as being jobless, hungry, broke, away from home, lonely, or downhearted because of an unfaithful lover.
Therefore, these purists maintain that many melodies with the word "blues" in the title, and which are often spoken of as being the blues, are not the blues because their melodies lack this particular basic blues harmonic construction.

The twelve bar blues format is the most common pattern in blues, and learning to play it in a variety of ways is the basis of learning to play blues rhythm guitar.
Many blues guitarists learn these examples, and then spend the rest of their musical lives experimenting with the scale patterns and copying others to learn how to create music with these shapes.

The blues lyrics that punctuate the narrative at critical points suggest a system of folk knowledge and values that is crucial to a young fl woman's survival in the 1930s and '40s and which supports Claudia's cathartic role as storyteller.
I posit Claudia as the narrative's blues subject, its bluest "I" and representative blues figure, and Pecola as the abject tabula rasa on which the community's blues are inscribed.
The blues to which Claudia refers exemplify the cultural knowledge and values transmitted orally to Claudia that ease and assist her transition into womanhood--folk wisdom that is not conveyed to Pecola.

 On "The Weary Blues"
It combines traditional blues stanzas that emphasize the roots of African-American experience, touches of vaudeville blues as the roots were being "refined," pride in African-American creativity and forms of expression, and a sense of the weariness that ties together generations of African-Americans.
The blues singer in the poem transcends "his rickety stool," which seems to represent his life condition and not just the appurtenances of the joint: "He played that sad raggy tune like a musical fool." We can reasonably infer that nothing in his life conveys the concentration and depth of his music.
What the blues articulates is the simultaneous presence of the "tragic and comic aspects of the human conditions." Thus, the blues in the poem is not the conventional "either/or" condition configured within the Cartesian construct.

Her style of the blues, most often sung by a woman, featured a straightforward eight-bar blues format--usually consisting of four or five stanzas united by a clearly developed theme or image.
For example, by the mid-1920s country singers from the Anglo-American tradition were singing blues, which they may have learned from oral tradition or from the classic women blues singers whose records dominated the market during the decade.
