  EightStar
The EightStar cut differs from the generic H&A diamonds in several trade-secret ways, which serve, among other things, to cause more light to be reflected at the edges of the diamond, leading to a somewhat larger look.
Use of it by Garry Holloway was partly responsible for the development of the Holloway Cut Advisor (HCA), which in 2003 is the best available online tool for consumers to use in evaluating the cut of a diamond based on crown and pavilion angles, surpassing the formerly leading AGS 0 cut grade.
EightStar diamonds are the best consistently performing diamonds in this tool, typically scoring less than 1.0 on a scale where 0 is the best and 10 or more is worst.

It was bought in late 1999 by the EightStar company of California, with the intent of a recutting.
As with every EightStar diamond, the American Star was cut using an exclusive light-tracking instrument called a 'FireScope' which allows cutters to align facets so precisely they can completely control the flow of light into and out of a diamond.
To most of EightStar's competitors who cut for bulk not beauty, sacrificing 10 percent of a D-color IF-clarity 15-carat diamond's weight is a catastrophic loss.

 GIA objects to EightStar's claims
The EightStar diamond was used in the brilliance study solely to satisfy the need for a stone with high symmetry to illustrate the appearance of a diamond in fully diffused lighting, not to serve as a model of a “perfect” diamond.
Which is, in fact, a ringing endorsement for Eightstar and quite a sting to other diamond brands that tout their exceedingly low tolerances for deviances in external proportions.
The fact is, each Eightstar has different proportions because each stone is cut to maximize its own internal symmetry regardless of external tolerances or proportions.

The Gemological Institute of America has refuted claims made in a press statement released by EightStar Diamond Company, makers of the EightStar diamond, which was based on two GIA studies.
The GIA studies on diamond "brilliance" (published in the Fall 1998 issue of Gems & Gemology) and "fire" (published in the Fall 2001 issue of Gems & Gemology) found there are multiple sets of proportions that produce favorable light return in diamonds.
The EightStar diamond was used in the brilliance study solely to satisfy the need for a stone with high symmetry to illustrate the appearance of a diamond in fully diffused lighting, not to serve as a model of a "perfect" diamond.

GIA management also objects to an EightStar claim that GIA named the EightStar diamond as the only real-world diamond that equals GIA's cyber-diamond for perfection of shape and faceting.
EightStar President Richard von Sternberg said he spoke with GIA President Bill Boyajian and that he understands that the GIA does not endorse or single out particular diamonds.

While several other brands tout patterns of hearts or arrows as proof of superior cut, von Sternberg explains that those forms are produced by instruments that measure only the eight main facets of the stone, unlike the Firescope, which evaluates all 57 facets.
An EightStar cutter is trained for several months and can spend as much as an hour and a half aligning each facet on the top of the diamond with its opposite on the bottom, continually employing the Firescope to check his or her work.
EightStar’s master cutter is von Sternberg’s wife, Alison, who says it takes three to four days to complete an EightStar stone compared to the three to five hours required for cutting what is known in the industry as a “hearts and arrows”; ideal-cut diamond.
