In the event, Oue's interpretation is surpassingly subtle, and would be so even if recorded competition were stiffer than James DePriest and the Oregon Symphony on Delos or Jesús López-Cobos and the Cincinnati SO on Telarc.
Oue's leavetaking after the 2001/02 season is puzzling, although interpretively in the past, on several of the orchestra's dozen Ref/Rec discs before this one, he has been efficient and musicianly without making one sit forward with ears a-quiver.
But Oue's is more sinuous throughout, and so breathtakingly recorded that listeners with HDCD equipment can blow out their speakers (I say that even without having an HDCD player, eheu!), leaving the rest of us to settle for ero-ero with class.

Although The Rite of Spring ballet caused a near riot at its Paris premiere and assured Igor Stravinsky a place in the pantheon of artistic enfants terribles, it was the earlier ballet, The Firebird, that catapulted him to stardom in the classical world.
On this new Reference Recordings CD by Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra, we have performances of both the earlier ballets, as well as a performance of the later symphonic poem The Song of the Nightingale.
From the opening rush of notes, Oue connects this fairly compartmentalized score with the utmost authority.

The conductor Eiji Oue (pronounced AY-jee OH-way) took a big career step when he became music director of the Minnesota Orchestra last season after four years at the helm of the Erie (Pa.) Philharmonic.
It is also quite a leap for him and the orchestra to make their recording debut by plunging not merely into the mainstream of the recorded repertory but into the technical white water of works like ''The Firebird'' and, especially, ''The Rite of Spring.''
Oue offers no clear view of the ''Firebird'' Suite, trudging forward through shapeless phrases and imponderable voicing.
