  Teach in Japan - Eikaiwa
Easy Eikaiwa is designed to scale from private teachers out to schools with several campuses without making much difference to your fixed expenses. The bigger players probably have a large enough IT budget to develop their own in-house solutions, so I’m here to offer the same services to those who need a cheap point of entry.
Gaba is another eikaiwa, which has tried to distinguish itself from the rest by offering only one-on-one (or, as they say, ‘man-to-man’) lessons and by integrating computer technology to the lessons.
I wrote briefly about The Big Four eikaiwa a while ago, but now that I’ve been here for a while and I’ve talked to different teachers, it’s time to be a bit more in-depth.

Eikaiwa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Eikaiwa (Japanese: 英会話) is the Japanese word for "English conversation." Some speakers of English use the term to mean English language schools in Japan, which are also commonly referred to as English conversation schools.
Some students attend eikaiwa to supplement their school studies, others are studying a second language as a hobby or to improve their business skills or for socializing purposes or in preparation for travel.
Many parents send their children to eikaiwa in the hope of improving their child's hopes of higher education, or to encourage them to be at ease with foreigners.

Nova (eikaiwa) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nova Group is the largest of the Big Four eikaiwas (or private English teaching companies) in Japan, with approximately 50% of total market share.
In 2004, Nova totaled about 70.6 billion yen in sales, and as of March, 2004, there were 618 Nova branches and the Multimedia Center located in Osaka, Japan.
An editorial in Metropolis argued that the Union's militancy would actually harm the majority of teachers and impact the wider community of foreigners working in Japan.

 Geographies of the Eikaiwa Wonderland
Eikaiwa is a Japanese term that can be translated as “the activity of English conversation.” It is often used metonymically to mean an organization that teaches conversational English, particularly one of the big private English conversation schools.
The goals of this project were to investigate the character of gendered participation in private English conversation schools (eikaiwa) and to identify a set of historically-rooted social, cultural and economic factors that contribute to this situation.
The complex properties of the eikaiwa wonderland are constituted by an interaction between larger social modalities, such as the labor market and associated economic geographies of internationalization that condition the gendered participation, and the daily practices and rituals that take place within the physical spaces of eikaiwa.

 EIKAIWA
During the Bubble Economy years, when the competition for students was the most intense, rival eikaiwa chain schools produced slick television ad spots that rivaled the commercials of Sony and Toyota.
Smaller, privately owned eikaiwa schools also abound, and flourish in the less populated areas that are often neglected by the large chains.
The typical eikaiwa gakkō instructor is a young college graduate from North America.

I would teach them a different way to respond to a question like this...as you only have to do a 5 minute lesson, there isn't really much you can do, so something short and simple liek this would be a good idea, imho.
My main concern when starting this subject was to find out what the interviewers at eikaiwas are looking for in sample lessons, ie what some of the criteria are that they scrutinize when evaluating my sample lesson.
GABA was not the school, and to be clear it wasn't a peer evaluated lesson, it was a group interview where all the interviewees acted as students, the recruiters did all the evaluating.

According to the language school chain’s instructor contract, foreign employees are forbidden to “participate in any interaction with the clients of the employer outside the place of employment.” In theory, insist Nova instructors, they are under threat of the sack for so much as a chance encounter with any of the company’s 450,000 students.

Culture Shock & Eikaiwa Teachers in Japan
Some complain about all Eikaiwa schools as if all of them are the same, and all are bad.
I assert that the rampant negativism on the internet about teaching at Eikaiwa schools is only in a very small part due to the schools, but is a symptom of culture shock and the difficulty adjusting to life in Japan for some teachers.
The boss who is in some cases also the landlord, is cast by the teacher (unconsciously) in the role of parental figure, and the Eikaiwa teacher, the star of our show, is the rebellious teenager with a need to get it off his or her chest.

Some JET's are required to do an Eikaiwa for their community as part of their job, while many do Eikaiwas as a "sideline".
Because of the diversity of the skills of the members of a given Eikaiwa, it is sometimes challenging to create activities and plans.
I don't remember a lot of specifics, but one of the things I do remember is that "people acquire language readily from experiences in their daily lives." I find this theory quite appealing since it parallels my experience of learning the Japanese language.
