Adjacent to the Egyptian city of Taba and Jordanian (previously Saudi) port of Aqaba, Eilat is located at the northern tip of the Gulf of Eilat, which is the eastern sleeve of the Red Sea (the western leading to the Suez Canal).
Eilat is named after the Biblical Elath, which now corresponds to modern neighboring Aqaba.
Eilat's weather is very hot and dry due to its proximity to the Negev, Sinai, Arabian and Sahara deserts.

Internal Security Minister Uzi Landau was due to present the government with a compromise plan that called for the staged transfer of the sea-based fish farms to large artificial ponds in the Arava Valley, Maariv reported.
Landau said the Gulf of Eilat was experiencing an ecological emergency and the government had to take firm action to save it, the paper said.
Landau admitted there was an argument between scientists concerning the affect of the fish farms' waste products on the gulf's coral reef reserves, but he said there was no question the waste was adding to the pollution threatening the marine environment.
