Eilean Donan is a castle in the western Scottish Highlands situated on a small island in Loch Duich about 1/2 a mile from Dornie, and is accessible only by a footbridge.
Built in 1220 by Alexander II of Scotland, it is said to have been one of the refuges of Robert the Bruce when he was on the run from English soldiers.
Eilean Donan is the home of the Clan MacRae.

In 1984 the castle served as background in several scenes of "HIGHLANDER", a cinema-film with Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert (as a member of the Clan MacLeod, dressed as a MacLeod of Harris).
Lt.-Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap, grandfather of the present Constable of Eilean Donan, rebuilt the Castle with the aid of Farquhar MacRae, who had seen a vision of the ruined stronghold restored to its former glory.
Every detail of the restored structure was faithful to the original which was revealed to Farquhar MacRae in his dream, and later confirmed by old plans of Eilean Donan preserved with other records in Edinburgh Castle.

Eilean Donan was the ancestral home of clan MacRae from the late 14th century, when they were left in charge by the owners, the MacKenzies.
The castle was wrecked by bombardment from the Royal Navy in 1719 while it was being garrisoned by Spanish troops, in support of the 'Old Pretender' (James Francis Edward Stewart, the Catholic son of the exiled James II, and father of Bonnie Prince Charlie).

  During the 14th century, Eilean Donan was the subject of a dispute between the MacKenzies and the Earldom of Ross.

I have read that Eilean Donan was taken over by Hector Roy Mackenzie in 1497 and then captured in 1504 by the Earl of Huntly under James IV, although this isn't mentioned on the information boards at the castle which continue as follows:
John remained Governor of Eilean Donan for the rest of his life and John's son Murdoch "Maighister Mor" Murchison followed him as Governor of the castle.
He is a direct descendant of John Murchison (born in 1510) who was minister and governor of Eilean Donan Castle in the service of the clan chief of the MacKenzies.

It was besieged by Donald Gorm MacDonald (see Duntulm) in 1539, but he was killed by an arrow shot from the castle during the attack.
Eilean Donan was garrisoned with Spanish troops during the rising of 1719, but it was surrendered after being attacked by three frigates from the seaward side, and it was blown up from within.
