Eileen Barker has spent 25 years in the field studying the eruption of new religious movements in an age of volatile belief.
Eileen Barker is Professor of Sociology with Special Reference to the Study of Religion at the London School of Economics (LSE).
Barker describes how, in 1986, she was observing four ex-cult members talking about their experiences at the annual meeting of a group dedicated to warning others about the danger of cults.

Barker goes as far as to admit that some of the arguments for creationism can be fairly complex and that there are, in fact, qualified scientists among the proponents of creationism, but this seems somewhat hard to swallow.
Barker fails to notice that a comment of this sort is applicable to all the positions discussed in her article and as such is inconclusive.
Concluding the article Barker alludes (p.197) patronizingly to creationist scientist's role of comforting the 'ignorant masses' (as in the previous article), but beyond this she does allow that creationism as such may be beneficial to science in the long run.

He also wrote in the book that the gurus who are eloquent, authoritarian, or interfere in the private lives of followers are the ones who are more likely to be unreliable and dangerous.

Barker suggests observing not only those aspects of society which NRMs want to change but those aspects of the NRMs which their societies heed.
For instance the Moonies are blamed in America for not paying taxes and brainwashing; in Britain for breaking up families; in France and Denmark for their politics; in Germany for their use of social security and mental health facilities; in Norway for their theology.
Barker reports survey data showing that more Americans knew of Jonestown than any other event this century except the dropping of the atom bomb and Pearl Harbor [more than the Kennedy assassinations?] People's views of other movements were widely contaminated by the event.

 Freedom of religion requires accurate use of 'cult' label
Barker and other speakers said denying religious freedom to new or strange groups is not only wrong in principle but could open the door for later removal of those rights from older, more established religions.
Barker acknowledged many people feel "apprehension and repulsion" toward newer religious movements like Hare Krishna, Scientology and the Unification Church.
The brainwashing concept is only a metaphor, Barker said, adding that the idea of group members becoming mindless zombies is contrary to all evidence.
