Severus Snape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Severus Snape was born to Tobias Snape, a Muggle, and Eileen Prince, a witch.
Eileen Prince, the student suspected originally by Hermione, was in fact Snape's mother.
The nickname was derived from her maiden name of "Prince" and from Severus's father having been a Muggle, making Severus himself a "half-blood".

Eileen was plainer than bread pudding, but he was impressed by her weaving skills and her air of self-reliant seriousness, or rather what he termed seriousness, while everyone else called it ‘sulks.’ He took no notice of what they said.
Eileen stayed at his house that night, with him sleeping on the settee for the sake of the proprieties.
Eileen had little enough to say, she remained silent, but as Tobias was himself not one for chatter, they seemed to do well together.

Eileen was concentrating hard, her dark-eye brows scrunched, leafing through books looking for more information on the dark arts, as she still had her curiosity peaked from the night at the library before Christmas.
Eileen had already done something like this passing that snake in the library a couple of weeks ago, and was once again filled with the desire for Tom’s approval and had no problem picking the right moment to pass through the snakes, rotating in the inner circle.

Eileen had some inkling that Geoffrey was dating her to get back at his mother for something, but she hoped eventually that he might marry her with the same odd spite in mind.
Eileen had offered her family home for the short term, but Tobias had insisted that it would be easier for him to find work where he was known, and that the factories of London were less desirable than the mills, mines and pubs closer to home.
Eileen also wrote an invitation to Poppy, asking her to attend her wedding and also asking her to find a muggle dress for the occasion if she could come and telling her how to write back to let her know.

Eileen, barely nineteen years old and friendless, had nowhere to turn, no one to protect her and her son, so she stayed with Tobias.
Eileen, determined to teach her son to protect himself at all costs, taught her son more curses, hexes, and jinxes than the average little boy would ever need to know.

Eileen Prince - Snape's Mother - Chamber of Secrets
I don't think Eileen would have been a Death Eater; just because she was at Hogwarts at the same time as Voldemort (and perhaps in the same house) does not make her a Death Eater.
She may have been in his circle of close-knit friends that Dumbledore describes as "forerunners to the death eaters," but there is no evidence that she stayed close to Voldemort after he left school.
Since she did take advanced potions, Eileen may have been good enough to be part of the Slug Club and have closer contact with Tom Riddle.

Initially it seemed to me as though Voldemort may have been the Half-Blood Prince of the title, because he is a power monger and had been since his Hogwarts days, and he is known to be a half-blood, with one wizard parent and one non-practicing "Muggle" parent.
Given that the Prince knows better than his professor and the textbook writer, and his ability to make up spells, it became a natural guessing game to try to figure out who was the Prince.

But I doubt she's eileen Prince - for one thing she's not that old - she is not greying at all, and at 60 ish one would expect her to be grey.
They usually have middle names in the wizarding world and I think Eileen Prince´s full name is Eileen Irma Prince and she changed it because her son Severus who wanted to play with the "pure-blood big boys" did not want to be associated with his mother who married a muggle and was only a librarian.
In this case she would be around 65 now, and had given birth to Snape approximately at the age of 30, because Snape is approximately 35 now (there´s a comment of JKR on Snape´s age in one interview where she says he is somewhere in the middle of his 30s).

The Book Spoiler for the book - HARRY POTTER and the Half Blood Prince
Half-Blood refers to the fact that his father was a muggle (Tobias Snape) but the Prince part refers to his mother's maiden name (Eileen Prince).
This leads to revealing that the reason Tonks was upset was that she was in love with Lupin but he was reluctant because he was a werewolf.
Snape's parents were Eileen Prince (a pure-blood) and Tobias Snape (a muggle) so Half-Blood is correct, but Prince is his mother's surname.
