Ein deutsche s Requiem had indeed had a partial premiere in Vienna in 1867, and then a full premiere in Bremen in1868, and had then been performed in various cities in Germany during 1869.
On 20 August 1947, Ein deutsches Requiem was performed at the Lucerne Festival: Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and Hans Hotter sang the solo roles, and the performance was conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler.

Notes on Ein Deutsches Requiem (Johannes Brahms)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Its earliest music, the funeral march of the second movement, was originally conceived as a middle movement for a projected symphony in the mid-1850's, when Brahms was helping Clara Schumann through the traumatic institutionalization and death of her husband Robert, Brahms's friend and mentor.
Brahms's selection of the texts for the seven movements of Ein Deutsches Requiem reflects his lifelong familiarity with scripture and his ability subtly to inflect it to meet his own needs.
On the heels of this rigorous exercise in eighteenth-century counterpoint, the folk-like simplicity of the fourth movement comes as a jolt; with its ethereal vision of eternity as the court of God, this is as close as Brahms comes to an expression of the transcendental.

Ein deutsches Requiem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The final, seven-movement version of Ein deutsches Requiem was premiered in Leipzig on February 18, 1869 with Carl Reinecke conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra and Chorus, and soloists Emilie Bellingrath-Wagner and Franz Krükl.
Although the Requiem Mass in the Catholic liturgy begins with prayers for the dead ("Grant them eternal rest, O Lord"), Ein deutsches Requiem emphasizes comforting the living, beginning with the text "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." A comparable sacred, humanist worldview persists through the work.
Ein deutsches Requiem is unified compositionally by a three note motif of a leap of a third, followed by a step in the same direction.

 Johannes Brahms - A German Requiem - Ein deutsches Requiem - A Good-Music-Guide Review
Its usual form is a setting of the Catholic liturgical mass for the dead, with its descriptions of damnation and please for the souls to be spared the horrors of hell.
As Brahms himself said, it is less a Requiem for the dead than one for the living, less a work of religion than a work of humanity.
Ein deutsches Requiem was Brahms' first great orchestral success.

Perennially noted as one of Brahms' most monumental works, Ein Deutsches Requiem ("A German Requiem") serves as a double memorial to his mentor Robert Schumann and to Brahms' mother.
What makes the requiem especially apt for Easter performances are the themes of immortality and love surrounding the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Brahms wrote his German requiem (aptly titeld "*A* german requiem, and he later preferred to substitute "Mankind" for the word "German") around some tragic events in his life: the death of his mother, of his friend Robert Schumann, of the fierce but unanswered love he felt for Clara Wieck.

INKPOT#83 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: Requiem Cycle - BRAHMS Ein deutsches Requiem. ...
Written in seven movements, the text for Ein deutsches Requiem was drawn from various sections of the Bible - bringing the listener the messages of salvation and hope, rather than the view of fervent fear of death.
At the end of this composition, Brahms had dedicated the "German Requiem" not only to Schumann and his mother, but to the whole of humanity as well.
Nevertheless, there is no need to wonder why this requiem has joined the canons of classical music history, enduring in its simple message and in its lyricism, emotion and spirituality.

The composer denied that the Requiem was specifically for Schumann, but rather for "the whole of humanity." 'A German Requiem' does not move audiences with fire and brimstone but instead touches the heart with its serenity.

After the excitement of Mass In Blue the Brahms Requiem was almost an anticlimax, though it's always a pleasure.
Bethany Halliday was back on stage for the soprano solo (I liked her better in the jazz - her voice has too much of a beat for me in this role) and Graeme Danby, another ENO stalwart, provided the baritone.
David Temple, musical director of the Hertfordshire Chorus since 2000, demonstrated his versatility in handling both the classical and the contemporary by drawing a thrilling performance from this big choir, while the wonderfully gentle, pastoral textures were developed with great sensitivity.
