Biographical Sketch of Jónas Hallgrímsson (illus.)(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Einar's statue stands in Band Shell Park (Hljómskálagarður) in Reykjavík, directly east of The Pond.
It was the sculptor's first publicly commissioned work in Iceland and he was forced --- much against his will --- to tailor it to the taste and wishes of the sponsoring committee.
Some forty years later, in 1945, he secured his revenge by creating another and much more spiritualized image of Jónas --- "In Memory of the Poet" ("Í minningar skáldsins") --- which can be seen in Hnitbjörg, the museum in Reykjavík devoted to Einar's memory.
The Einar Jonsson Sculpture Museum :: arcspace.com(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
It is the Museum of the Icelandic sculptor EinarJonsson (1873-1954) which is also his former home and studio.
In 1914, Einar, who was living in Copenhagen at that time, donated all his artwork to the State of Iceland on the condition that it would build him a museum and studio in Reykjavik.
The EinarJonsson Museum is open in the afternoon all days except Mondays during the summer season and on weekends from September to May, closed in December and January.
Near Sundhöllin is the Einar Jónsson Museum on Njarðargata, just across the street from Hallgrímskirkja Church, dedicated to sculptor Einar Jónsson (1874 – 1951).
The museum is open during winter on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm – 5pm, and daily except Mondays during summer from 2pm – 5pm.
Einar Jónsson was one of the country’s most prominent artists, and his works are greatly influenced by Icelandic nature, religious concepts and the Icelanders’ attitude towards the almighty.
Einar Jónsson was Iceland's foremost sculptor and he himself designed and established this museum, which contains several hundred of his works spanning his 60-year career.
The museum building itself is deemed to be Jónsson's largest work, and served as his home, gallery and studio.
It is adjoined by a pristine treed sculpture garden, which sports 26 bronze casts of the artist's work.
Einar was Iceland's foremost modern sculptor, and this building was given to him as a studio and living space by the Icelandic government in 1923.
He worked here in an increasingly reclusive manner until his death in 1954, when the building was given over to displaying more than a hundred of his works - many based on religious and political themes - to the public.
If the museum is closed, you can peek into the garden at the rear of the museum, where several examples of Jónsson's work are displayed alfresco, or admire his most visible work, the statue of independence leader, Jón Sigurðsson, found in front of the Alþingshúsið in Austurvöllur square
In 1914 sculptor Einar Jónsson (1874-1954) donated his works to the Icelandic nation with the proviso that they be housed in a museum bearing his name.
In the museum building and its adjacent sculpture garden are displayed 123 works by the artist, paintings and sculptures.
The museum also endeavours to spread information and understanding of Einar Jónsson's work by way of guided tours, lectures and publications.
In addition, the quality and intricate features of the sculptures may not come across in the small images that are below.
The EinarJonsson museum is located across the street from the towering Hallgrimskirke and accompanying Leif Eiriksson statue.
In the picture to the left, the building in the background on the right is the main museum but the sculpture garden lies behind and is open year round, I believe.
