Einojuhani Rautavaara (born October 9, 1928) is a Finnish composer of classical music, probably the best known Finnish composer of his generation.
Rautavaara is a prolific composer, and has written in a variety of forms and styles.
A characteristic 'Rautavaara sound' might be a rhapsodic string theme of austere beauty, with whirling flute lines, gently dissonant bells, and perhaps the suggestion of a pastoral horn.

Einojuhani Rautavaara (born 9 October 1928) is internationally one of the best known and most frequently performed Finnish composers.
At the age of seventeen Rautavaara began studying the piano and later went on to study musicology at Helsinki University and composition at the Sibelius Academy.

Einojuhani Rautavaara is a strange fruit of finnish classical music scene, musically and personally.
This isn't the first time when Einojuhani is abusing topics of Kalevala (our national pole book if somebody didn't know that) and hopefully this isn't the last time either.
I was quite enthusiastic about this album before I heard it because I like Einojuhani's other works and when I heard about dark synth-tape-choir-etc-etc CD composed by him, my blood was stirring.

Most admitted however, that this was a true grand opera (it is three hours long and has twenty five soloists) and that the composer's use of his own libretto was a well-founded choice.
Accustomed as many of us have become, to new opera with decidedly unmusical (not to say dreary) lines for the singers, the skill with which Rautavaara writes manageable, interesting and attractive music for every type of voice, is a genuine delight to the ear.
The skill applies equally to both solo writing and to the many ensembles; this score provides a real (and too rare) sense that voices and orchestra are intended as equal partners in a unified sound world.

Rautavaara, however, "adopted a rather cavalier attitude to row technique." As he would do for the next forty years, he incorporated some elements of serialism in his work, but combined them with elements from other styles, to create works that are a highly individualistic pastiche of bits and pieces.
For a time in the early 1960s, his compositions had a strong and overt Romantic flavor, and by the early 1970s, the dominant trait in Rautavaara's work was his personal blend of neo-Romanticism.
Regardless of the style in which he writes, Rautavaara takes an approach to composition that is both mystical and intellectual.

Actually there is nothing new or unique about incorporating bird sounds into what would otherwise be a mainstream musical work, but Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara seemed to carry it to a new height by giving recordings of flocks of birds central status in his Cantus Arcticus: Concerto for Birds and Orchestra.
Now the notion of integrating birds into a symphony orchestra could be perceived as gimmicky or self-serving, but Rautavaara handled his chosen medium with taste and just the right amount of enhancement.
It should also be noted that Rautavaara was a favorite of Sibelius, so it is fitting that their music should be paired on the same program.
