Einsiedeln is a Benedictine monastery in the Canton of Schwyz, Switzerland, dedicated to Our Lady of the Hermits, that title being derived from the circumstances of its foundation, from which the name Einsiedeln is also said to have originated.
In 965 Gregory, the third Abbot of Einsiedeln, was made a prince of the empire by Otto I, and his successors continued to enjoy the same dignity up to the cessation of the empire in the beginning of the nineteenth century.
Dom Thomas Bossart, the fifty-third Abbot of Einsiedeln and former dean of the monastery, was elected in 1905.

Einsiedeln (pronounced ein-seed-uln) means hermitage, and for over 1,060 years, the Maria-Einsiedeln monastic community has developed into one of the most beloved Benedictine abbeys and Marian shrines in the world.
The first Swiss missionaries of Einsiedeln purchased a tract of land in Indiana and dedicated their new monastery to the patronage of "St. Meinrad" on March 21, 1854, the feast of St. Benedict.
Though the early years at St. Meinrad were harsh and financially unstable, the monastic community there grew in numbers and gained the status of an "abbey" on September 20, 1870, under their first abbot Martin Marty, OSB.

This project originated as a consequence of the inventory of the Repertory of 19th century's swiss composers in the music library of the monastery in Einsiedeln done by the Swiss RISM branch.
There was as strong wish on behalf of the director of the music library of the monastery in Einsiedeln, Father Lukas Helg, to fully document the Swiss composers of the 19th century in the music library of the monastery of Einsiedeln and to execute the inventorisation in form of a partnership with RISM-Switzerland.
The costs for this project were fully reimbursed by the monastery in Einsiedeln; for the project the monastery itself was financially supported by a substantial contribution coming from the cultural foundation of the UBS.
