Topic: Einsiedeln district

Schwyz, Switzerland (Caton) - LoveToKnow 1911
An attack by Schwyz on Einsiedeln was the excuse for the Austrian invasion that was gloriously beaten back in the battle of Morgarten (November 15th, 1315).
All these districts were governed by Schwyz as "subject lands," the supreme power resting with the Landsgemeinde (or assembly of all male citizens of full age), which is first distinctly mentioned in 1294, though it seems to have already existed in 1281, when mention is also made of a common seal.
In 1832 the outer districts (Einsiedeln, the March, Kiissnacht and Pfaffikon) formed themselves into a separate canton, an act which brought about a federal occupation of the old canton in 1833, this ending in the dissolution of the new canton, the constituent parts of which were put on an equal political footing with the rest.

Zwingli - Encyclopedia of Religion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
His father Ulrich was a district official of the little town of Wildhaus, and a cousin of his mother, Margaret Meili, was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Fischingen in Thurgau.
Erasmus was keenly aware of the laxity of ecclesiastical life (the abuses in external worship, the degeneracy of a large proportion of the clergy), and rightly agitated a reform within the Church, impressing its necessity on the ecclesiastical authorities.
Zwingli prevailed on the council to forbid his entrance into Zurich; and even then the pope argued that, so long as the preacher was still receiving a papal pension., he could not be a formidable adversary, and he gave him a further sop in the form of an acolyte chaplaincy.

Louis of Bavaria withdrew the ban in 1315 and obliged the Archbishop of Mainz to recall the excommunication of the inhabitants of the forest districts (Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden, and Lucerne).
The districts of Uri and Obwalden won territories south of the Alps in the Val Leventina (1403); some years later (1411) the League occupied jointly the Val d'Ossola and in 1419 bought the Countship of Bellinzona.
This latter war ended in the victory of the Protestant districts, and it was followed by a new partition of the common lordships in favor of the conquerors, as well as by the granting of complete parity to the Protestant inhabitants of the subject lands.

 Huldreich Zwingli
Zwingli soon evinced his capacity as a preacher, denouncing the evils of the time, the chief of these, to his patriotic mind, being the hiring out of the Swiss to any one other than the pope as mercenaries, an occupation whichoften resulted in their moral ruin.
Because some of his congregation were carrying on this traffic, his opposition made his position so uncomfortable that he was glad to accept a call to Einsiedeln[?], only a few miles away, and the chief place of pilgrimage for Switzerland, South Germany, and Alsace.
When he met leading men at Einsiedeln, and found that the corruption of the Church in clergy and theology was a common theme, he ventured to discuss these matters in the pulpit.

There are maps showing the districts of Switzerland, and of the cantons of Lucerne, Neuchâtel, Schwyz, Valais, and Vaud.
Heinzenberg district merged with Hinterrhein; Münstertal district merged with Inn; Oberlandquart and Unterlandquart districts repartitioned to form Landquart and Prättigau/Davos (probably part of Unterlandquart was removed and attached to Oberlandquart, with the remainder of Unterlandquart becoming Landquart); Glenner and Vorderrhein districts merged to form Surselva.

Literary Criticism (1400-1800) | Zwingli, Huldrych | INTRODUCTION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Zwingli was born in Wildhaus, in the Toggenburg valley, in the rural district of St. Gallen, Switzerland.
He went temporarily to Einsiedeln, where he stayed for three years and began to actively preach in what became the reform tradition, holding that the Bible was the supreme authority for God's will and criticizing such Roman Catholic practices as the selling of papal indulgences.
During these years Zwingli's preaching and writing had been having an effect in Zurich; in 1524 the council ordered all images and music removed from the churches, and in 1525 the mass was discontinued, replaced by a simpler ceremony in the vernacular language rather than Latin.
