The events that lead to the creation of our universe have been discussed for generations, and it's only now that science is beginning to put together the real story of our universe's formation.
The very best and most likely theory to explain how the universe came into being, is the "Big Bang Theory", which states that in the very beginning, all the matter in the universe was condensed into an absolutely minute area of space, a bit like the effects consistent with the forces of a Black Hole.
This theory, first attempted by Einstein, suggests that an infinite number of Parallel universes exist across multiple dimensions, and that our universe was created as a result of a "collision" between two of them in another dimension.

The idea of an expanding, dynamic universe is fairly new to Western man. Before the scientific revolution, thinkers imagined a static universe in which the stars where embedded in an unchanging crystalline firmament.
Einsteins original description of gravity, buttressed by early success in predicting the results of observations, forcefully implied that the universe could not be static.
Einstein was shocked by this implication and added to his theory a famous fudge factor, the cosmological constant, which would save the static universe.

If you accept Einsteins explanation of gravity, which I know you do, then his theory of curved space would indicate that space was made out of something.
I believe that the universe is finite in size and energy, and that it will continue to expand until a)gravity stops it from expanding or b) all the matter and energy is converted into space.

This is a "machine" that is part of the structure of the universe, a machine you step through into the past.
