Topic: Eisegesis

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

  Carm, Theological Dictionary, E - F
Christ's atonement was efficacious; it produced the result of forgiveness of sins for the elect.
Eisegesis is when a person interprets and reads information into the text that is not there.
Therefore, the text does not teach what the Mormons say and they are guilty of eisegesis; that is, reading into the text what it does not say.

 Pratie Place: Dear Diary,
I was thrilled by this because Zed is writing his first paper at college on the way people dip into the Bible and fish out passages which support their own views, and I never knew there was a word for it.
Eisegesis is the approach to Bible interpretation where the interpreter tries to "force" the Bible to mean something that fits their existing belief or understanding of a particular issue or doctrine.
In the end, eisegesis is an exercise that in most cases leads to wrong interpretation, and therefore improper applications of those verses in the person's life.

However, probably the majority of church leaders insist these days could represent billions of years—this is ‘eisegesis’, as the billions of years is a belief from outside of Scripture that is read into Scripture (resulting in the clear words of Scripture being reinterpreted on the basis of these outside ideas).
Understanding the difference between ‘eisegesis’ and ‘exegesis’ is really the key to the effectiveness of the church in today’s culture.
Sadly, the church is infected with the eisegesis ‘virus’—and as a result, the Christian worldview that was once so prevalent in the Western world is waning.

Exegesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The word exegesis means "to draw the meaning out of" a given text.
Exegesis may be contrasted with eisegesis, which means to read one's own interpretation into a given text.
In general, exegesis presumes an attempt to view the text objectively, while eisegesis implies more subjectivity.

It is an ethical distinction: exegesis respects the integrity of the text, and eisegesis does not.
The term "exegesis" is an ideological subterfuge used to conceal a preference for one type of eisegesis over others, to make one way of reading into the text appear to be the natural, normal reading- out of what the text had within it.
The notion of a scientific critical exegesis is as dangerous in its own way as the proclamation of the "true meaning of the Bible" (as inspired by God) on the part of fundamentalist religion, to which the theology of the text is functionally equivalent.

Eisegesis and exegesis are Greek words often used in seminary in the field of translating.
In eisegesis the writer ignores the original meaning substituting their own preconceived ideas or doctrines.
In this present age, when there are over 30,000 different denominations of Christianity each believing it is the way, the truth and the life, it is expedient for sincere seekers, to ask the Holy Spirit to deliver them from all religious eisegetical garbage they have swallowed.

White is the one who is committing the error of eisegesis because he is assuming a universal application when the text does not warrant or demand such.
THAT is "eisegesis" because the literary context does not demand it, nor does the historical context suggest it.
White who is misunderstanding the text because the presuppositions he is bringing to the text are not even remotely relevant to the historical situation that instigated this exchange between Jesus and this crowd of Jews.

Eisegesis on the other hand is the “placing” of one’s own meaning into the Scriptural text.
The ideal of course in interpreting a text from this description is exegesis and not eisegesis.
Knowing the terms exegesis and eisegesis is just to help us know that Biblical interpretation is not just made without careful study and analysis.

Eisegesis, on the other hand, reads into the text what the interpreter wishes to find or thinks he finds there.
Although we must all stand in awe of the tremendous achievement of modem biblical scholarship and must not fail to appreciate what has been accomplished, we must also recognize that although modern scholarship illumines certain aspects of the text, it tends to blind us to others.
The question is not exegesis or eisegesis but rather what is revealed to and about the interpreter in the interpretation.

Most Misunderstood Passage in the Bible 2
I learned that there is a big difference between "exegesis" and "eisegesis." Let me explain by looking at the definitions of these two very important words.
As you can see for yourself if we follow the laws of eisegesis we can be assured of arriving at an erroneous interpretation of the text and lose the truths the prophet or writer intended to convey.
Simply, we are guilty of not drawing out of the passage the intended meaning of the prophet (exegesis), but rather, misinterpreting the passage by reading into the passage a preconceived belief formed by what others have said (eisegesis) which cannot be supported by critical examination of the text.

Eisegesis, David tells us, “is reading your personal interpretations into the Biblical text.”; According to all scholars trained in the grammatical-historical interpretation of the Scripture, eisegesis is the gravest of sins.
In his book Unleashing the Scripture, Hauerwas states that he no longer trusts “the distinction between exegesis and eisegesis.” He acknowledges that the historical-critical method may provide readings of Scripture that are helpful to the proclamation of the gospel, but he rejects the privileging of such readings.
Eisegesis in its proper sense is the interaction of faith with the Scriptures.

In response to Dr. Lewis' accusation of biblical eisegesis on the part of the author, it is interesting to note that the Babylonian Talmud, which contains one of the widest collections of biblical exegesis native to the Jewish tradition, comes to the same conclusion that Dr. Kutz does (see Horayot 10b).
Whatever the historical and theological merits of this redacted collection of late oral tradition, it seems ironic to refute my charge of eisegesis from a source that arguably specialises in it.

The word eisegesis is a theological term used to describe an approach to interpreting a passage in the Bible by "reading into" the passage a meaning that is not evident at all by the passage itself, or the context in which it appears in the Bible.
Thus eisegesis is usually perceived as a negative term, and indicates that the person using the method of eisegesis is not being intellectually honest.
Instead, he is coming to the passage with a pre-conceived notion on a particular doctrinal matter, and wishing to force the passage to fit that preconceived notion.

Eisegesis, on the other hand, is reading a foreign idea into the text and forcing a meaning on it.
But unfortunately, not only does this idea of ‘universal drawing’ contradict the statement Jesus makes in John 6:44 (all who are drawn are raised), but it ignores the context of 12:32 and eisegesis is now being used for interpretation.
Eisegesis would be to simply take the added word ‘men’ and determine within yourself that ‘men’ means all people without exception, and there is your eisegesis!

The "correct" way to read Scripture, say some, is using exegesis, which is bringing out the supposed "clear" meaning of the text or the intention of the author.
Is there even an "objective" meaning (from a purely scholarly standpoint) to the text, since both the Old and New Testaments were written for living, religious communities, and the texts were intended for these communities only.
There are limits to eisegesis, and the community that produced the texts, the Church, sets various limits on how its own documents may be read.

A highly illuminating discussion of the issue of eisegesis, particularly as related to the use of traditional interpretation, began with a complex question from Alon Goshen Gottstein, scholar of Rabbinics and founder of the interfaith Elijah Institute in Jerusalem.
Important as it is for understanding the right use traditional interpretation, the question of eisegesis also came sharply to the fore with the proposal of a modern midrash by Bonna Devora Haberman, resident scholar of women's studies at Brandeis University.

Bonocore then provides more anachronistic eisegesis of the text in Clement by moving more then two centuries into the future, and a thousand miles away geographically, to a quotation by Athanasius, where Athanasius does use the term "Levite" of a deacon.
But this is another example of eisegesis, this time reading into the text of Scripture itself.
Yet, even in NT times, while the TERMS "bishop" and "presbyter" were still being used interchangeably, it is also clear that each city-church possessed an "arch-presbyter" (what we would call a "bishop") -- a singular leader of the church.

Exegesis must be distinguished from “eisegesis.” In exegesis the expositor draws out the author’s intended meaning.
In eisegesis the expositor interprets a text by reading into it his own ideas.
The expositor is not responsible for what the author has said, but he is responsible for a faithful rendering of the text.
