We went to the tunnel, however, and walked its entire length, inspecting the point where the fire seemed to be the worst and where the pavement in the roadway was rough with holes.
Since the walls of these tunnels are flat fl from the years of use, it was impossible to ascertain from the smoke patterns on the wall and ceiling which way the smoke went from the fire scene.
With a tunnel of this length, it is important that a fire be detected early and its location be clearly defined, so the Swiss depend on the fire detectors as their primary fire prevention weapon.

Annual maintenance of the tunnel would be $1.21 million, according to the study, compared with an estimated $340,000 annually to maintain the bypass.
Several tunnels suggested by tunnel supporters as comparisons, including the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado, were examined and either fared poorly compared with the bypass or were determined not be similar enough to the proposed tunnel, according to the report.

Tunnel Maintenance Costs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Dividing the Eisenhower maintenance figures by, say, two to account for differences in traffic and adjusting for the length of the proposed tunnel gives us a yearly maintenance estimate of $535,000.
Thus the tunnel might cost from $34,000 to $355,000 per year more than the bypass to maintain if we accept all of Caltrans figures and make only reasonable assumptions about maintenance being roughly proportional to traffic.
