In 1940, Eisner created a goofball detective named Denny Colt who died (not really) and was reborn as "The Spirit," a cemetery-dwelling protector of the public - and pretty girls in particular.
As Eisner's authorized biographer, I spent the last three years with him in his studio and his home (he spent the last two decades of his life in Tamarac, near Fort Lauderdale).

 Disney Chairman Eisner Accepts Award
Eisner received the Pioneer of the Year award presented by the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation on Thursday night.

The comics industry's Eisner Awards, named for pioneering writer and artist Will Eisner, are given as part of the annual ComicCon International convention.
The Eisner Award is commonly referred to as the industry's "Oscar," given for excellence in 26 categories in addition to special awards for humanitarian work, the Hall of Fame, etc. Eisners go to writers, artists, colorists, letterers, retailers, one-shot projects, limited series, continuing series--and, for the first time in 2005, digital comics.

Applications for either award should be submitted to the Humanities and Arts Office, NAC 5/225, no later than November 1 at 4:00 pm in the fall semester or March 14 at 4:00 pm in the spring.
Award winners will be asked to file brief reports summarizing projects or those portions of projects completed with the assistance of Rifkind Center funding.

Eisner, who died Monday evening due to complications following his recent heart surgery, was one of the most important architects of the American comic book...a medium that took life and form about the time he got into it.
Eisner quickly sent back a polite thanks and at the bottom of his note, he took the time to draw a little sketch, which I just ran through my scanner.
When the next award was announced, he was back in a vertical position to congratulate the recipient, not as royalty but as a peer.

So, thanks to Will Eisner, I have a career: a career as a comics artist in an industry he pioneered, as a storyteller combining words and pictures with a grammar he helped construct but mainly a career as a guy who introduces Will Eisner when he's given awards.
About the only award I haven't presented to Will is the one given in my corner of the cultural shtetl for the past dozen years or so: the prestigious Will Eisner Award for Achievement in Comics (that's because those are given out in San Diego and they'd have to spring for a plane ticket)....
In any case, Will Eisner has been the recipient of the Will Eisner Award at least three or four times and has even — like me — been inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.
